It's very easy to make some gorgeous necklaces and bracelets with old silky scarves and denim scraps. They are really simple to make, cost almost nothing and make a fantastic gift. Any silky fabric will do, old scarves or blouses. You can make beads out of strips of old denim as well as decorative denim feathers.

What you need Scraps of silky fabric and denim Old beads Jewelry clasps. Embroidery Thread Embroidery needle

First to make the denim beads. Cut the denim into very long thin triangular shaped pieces. Cover with fabric glue, and then wind round a pencil.

When fully wound remove from the pencil and leave to dry.

Continue until you have as many denim beads as you want.

To make the Necklace. Cut your silky fabric into strips 3-4 inches wide, the length will depend on whether you are making a necklace or a bracelet. Using a needle and thread, stitch some embroidery thread to the end of the fabric this will help you pull the fabric through the beads.

Thread your silky fabric through a bead then wrap round the next bead then through the next pulling tight as you go. Continue until you have the design you want.

This way you get to incorporate the lovely patterns and colours of your silky fabric into your necklace. When you are finished stitch a jewelry clasp into the ends of the fabric. There are more details on the blog (link at end) if you need them.

I also make upcycled necklaces using old eyeglasses and maps.
