3 Retro Summer Headscarf Styles Inspired by the 1960s & 1970s

2 Materials

I’m going to show you some vintage-inspired summer scarf styles from the 1960s and 1970s. When you go on vacation, if you’re anything like me, you never buy just one scarf. They said two heads are better than one, so why not two scarves on one head? I will show you three easy retro styles using two scarves.

Tools and materials:

  • Two silk scarves
  • Volumizing hair scrunchie

Style 1 - Boho chic

Folding the scarves into large bands

1. Fold the scarves

For this look, take two square silk scarves and fold them so that you have two large bands.

Tying the first scarf around the head

2. Tie the first scarf

Tie one scarf as a headband, as shown. Make a knot on the side and hide the ends by tucking them under the band.

Tying the second scarf around the head

3. Tie the second scarf

Now tie the second scarf over the first one with a double knot to hide the first knot.

Style 2 - The ingenue

This style I discovered is a charming way to create a swirl look from your scarf.

Tying hair up in a headscarf

1. Fold and tie the first scarf

Take your first scarf, fold it in half to create a triangle shape, and place it on your head from the back, tying a knot at the front. Then move the turban around your head so that the knot is at the side.

2. Fold and tie the second scarf

Now take the second scarf, fold it into a band, and slide it through the knot of the first scarf. Take the ends and twist them to make a swirl.

3. Tie up

Then twist the swirl round into a circle like a snake.

This look is very elegant and unique, and the swirl reminds me of snail shells that you find at the beach.

Style 3 - Bow belle

Tying hair up with a volumizing scrunchie

1. Tie hair up

For the next style, tie a high bun or ponytail on the top of your head using a volumizing scrunchie to create some more volume and make the style look like it’s from the 1960s.

2. Fold and tie the first scarf

Fold the first scarf as a triangle, place it over your hair and tie it up at the back.

3. Twist and tie the second scarf

Then take the second scarf, twist it and tie it at the front to make a bow.

Retro summer headscarf styles

Here is the third style complete. If you ever have two scarves and you can’t decide which one to wear, these three retro looks are great examples of how you can wear both at the same time.
