Hi, everybody. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you four different t-shirt upcycle ideas that you can use to make your wardrobe more fun! Let’s get started.

This post was transcribed by a member of the Upstyle editorial team from the original UpstyleTV episode.

Tools and materials:

  • Hair tie
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Fabric glue
  • Clothespin
  • Fabric chalk
  • Safety pin
T-shirt before the DIY

DIY t-shirt 1: Tucked-in

Finding the place for the hair tie

1. Find where you want the tie to go

Place your fingers on the outside of your shirt where you want the tie to be.

Gathering the fabric and tying it

2. Gather and tie off the fabric

On the inside, gather up all the fabric where your finger is down to the hem of the shirt. Gather it into a little plump and tie it off with the hair tie.

Pushing the fabric to the inside

3. Push the fabric in

Push the fabric into the inside and you’re done!

Here’s the finished t-shirt hack! This is a great alternative to half-tucking the shirt.

DIY t-shirt 2: Cut-shoulder

Cutting off the hem

1. Cut off the hem

This shirt is a little long and just doesn’t fit right, so we’re going to start by cutting off the hem. Don’t throw it away - we’re going to save that for later.

Cutting a slit in the shoulder

2. Cut a slit into each shoulder

Up by the shoulder, measure down a few inches, and then cut a slit into each shoulder, leaving a V.

Cutting off a small piece of fabric

3. Cut a piece of fabric

Cut a small piece of fabric from the hem.

Wrapping the fabric around the sleeve

4. Wrap the fabric around the sleeve

Gather up the remaining fabric of the sleeve and wrap the small piece of cut fabric around the bundled sleeve.

Securing with fabric glue

Secure with fabric glue.

Holding the glue in place with a clothespin

Hold it in place with a clothespin until the fabric glue dries.

Here’s the finished t-shirt hack! By cutting off the hem, I shortened the shirt just a little bit and added some nice detail to the shoulder that makes the shirt just fit so much better,

DIY t-shirt 3: Slitted muscle tank

Drawing an angled line

1. Draw an angled line on the back of the shirt

For this shirt, we’re working on the back. Fold it in half and use a ruler to draw an angled line, so you have a V on the back of the shirt.

2. Make 1-inch lines within the V

Then, make 1-inch lines with the chalk. I’m using chalk because it will wipe away and wash off really easily.

Cutting along the lines

3. Cut along the lines

Now, using the scissors, you only want to cut through the back so make sure the front part of the shirt is not in this cut.

Pulling on the back of the shirt

4. Pull on the back

Open the shirt back up and pull on it. This gives a real worn, shredded, fun look to the back. You can go really high up with this and expose much more of the back, or you can keep it minimal.

Cutting off the sleeves

5. Cut off the sleeves

Then, cut off the sleeves from the shirt to make it a muscle tank.

DIY t-shirt 4: Keyhole cut-out

Cutting out a triangle from the collar

1. Cut out a triangle from the collar of the shirt

For this t-shirt, let’s start by folding it in half. Make sure just the front is folded and that the back of the shirt isn’t a part of the gold. Then grab a ruler and draw a line with chalk from the collar of the shirt about three fingers’ worth down the front of the shirt.

Then, cut out the triangle. Again, make sure that the back of the shirt is not in the cut.

Trimming extra pieces

2. Trim extra pieces

Open up the t-shirt and trim off any extra pieces that were there, and you’ve got this cute little keyhole.

Rolling up the sleeves

3. Roll up the sleeves

The sleeves on this one are also a little long, so roll them up and, to keep them in place, use a safety pin or two.
