Broke a Mirror? Avoid 7 Years Bad Luck With This Fun Mirror Jacket DIY
One of the hottest trends in unique fashion style is wearing mirrored clothes. If you draw inspiration from reflective and highly polished surfaces (or if you accidentally broke a mirror!), this no-sew DIY mirror jacket is perfect for you! Here's how to do it.
Tools and materials:
- Extremely thin mirrors
- Thick rubber gloves
- Hammer (or even a stone)
- Tarp or heavy cloth bag or drop cloth
- Fabric glue - a large bottle
- Rough cloth for cleaning
- Denim jacket
- A large heavy object for weighing down the glue
- Sanitizer or alcohol
I got my inspiration for the DIY mirror jacket from a mirrored ornament I own, but also from seeing fashionable jackets, like this one.
First up, make sure to use very thin mirrors for this DIY!
1. Clean the mirror
Clean the mirror well using the rough cloth to remove any fingerprints.
2. Break the mirror
Lay the mirror on the tarp or drop cloth. Fold the tarp over to cover the mirror entirely.
Use the hammer on the top of the tarp with gentle strokes to break the mirror. You don’t want to smash and shatter the mirror into tiny shards. You want larger pieces.
3. Sort and clean the mirror pieces
Put on the heavy rubber gloves. Open the tarp and sort through the mirror pieces. Discard any pieces that have cracks on the edges or pieces that are too small.
Wipe any dust or dirt off the mirror pieces with the rough cloth, especially around the edges, to make sure they're not too sharp.
4. Create the mirror design
Lay the jacket down on a flat surface to expose the area to place the mirror.
Play around with the placement until you find a pattern that suits you best.
Put a heavy amount of fabric glue on the back of the mirror and press firmly into place. This may take a lot of glue. Once glued into place, the mirror pieces may look a bit messy, but we'll clean it up later.
Place the rough cloth directly on the top of the mirrors. Then lay a heavy object that covers the entire mirrored area for at least 48 hours to set the glue.
After the 2-day setting time, remove the heavy object and cloth. Clean the mirror using sanitizer or alcohol and gently wipe it with a rough cloth.
How to store and wash your DIY denim jacket
To fold the jacket, turn the jacket inside out and always keep the mirrored portion completely straight. To launder, hand wash only, as it's gentler, and use rubber gloves.

This looks entirely too dangerous; wearing long thin shards of glass on your body? No thanks. The vinyl fake chrome, yes, that kind please.
