Priming eyes

1. Apply primer

It’s essential to apply primer to your eyelids before applying any color because it evens out discoloration and creates a barrier between your skin’s natural oils and the eyeshadow.

This will help prevent creasing in your eyeshadow later on.

I used a cream eyeshadow instead of primer to serve the same purposes. It goes on creamy but dries down to a matte finish, it’s long-wear and crease-proof.

Apply this from the lash line and all the way up to the brow bone.

Next, dust on a small amount of translucent powder to take away any of the stickiness and to allow for a seamless application of eyeshadow.

2. Create depth in the crease with a transition shade

A transition eyeshadow is typically a neutral, matte shade (taupe, soft peach, caramel, brown…) used in between the crease color and the brow bone to create shape and gradient between colors.

Applying eyeshadow

Apply your transitional shade with a crease brush.

Next, add a shiny, vanilla tone on your mobile lid to brighten it up.

Use a similar shade from a palette that you already have. You can even go with a light pink or peach.

Whatever light tone you choose, it should have some iridescence to it (not matte) to help brighten.

3. Darken the corners

Use a darker brown shade to darken up the outer corners of the eyes in a sideways V shape.

4. Deepen the lash line

Apply eyeliner to a tight angled brush.

Then use the brush to carefully line your eyes. I do this because the tip of the liner is so bulbous so if you apply it directly, you have less control of the eyeliner.

This is especially helpful if you have small or deeper-set eyes.

If you want to soften the line, you can dip the brush in a dark brown matte eyeshadow and trace over the liner with the same brush.

Lining eyes

Clean up by going in with a pointed Q-tip dipped in moisturizer to clean up any fallout.

You can also sharpen and lift the lines up at the outer corner of your eyes.

5. Apply your skin makeup

Apply your foundation, concealer and foundation as usual.

6. Define your lower lash line

The trick to defining your lower lash line with mature skin is to keep it soft.

Use the transition shade from the beginning and line your lower lashes and marry everything together.

7. Fill in your brows

Fill in any sparse areas of your eyebrows using a soft hand.

8. Curl your eyelashes

This step will take years off your eyes, so if you do just one thing, let it be this: curl your lashes!

9. Apply mascara

Once you’ve curled your lashes as high as you can get them, apply black mascara. Full, thick lashes look flattering on everyone.

I’m often asked: should older women wear mascara on their bottom lashes?

My rule of thumb: if you have sparse bottom lashes, chronically watery eyes and/or very dark under-eye circles that are hard to cover with concealer, then skip the mascara on the bottom lashes.

If not, I would absolutely use mascara on the bottom lashes since adding this density to the bottom lashes can make your eyes look larger.
