DIY Refreshing Scalp Spray for Hair Growth

5 Minutes
Easy

Are you looking for a way to refresh your scalp in between washes? This DIY refreshing scalp spray is great for freshening up your roots and creating some extra shine! It may also help promote hair growth!

Over the years, my hair has been through a lot. I had two babies within a span of two years and have had hormonal issues on and off since. The constant phases of hair growth, then hair loss have changed my hair dramatically. Towards the end of last year, my hair was dry, thinning and unmanageable. For a few years now, I’ve heard of something called “mermaid hair spray;” maybe you’ve heard of it too. So I thought I’d give it a shot to see if it would help my hair.

I whipped up a bottle of the spray and began using it 2-3 times a day to see if it would produce some results. I kid you not, I could tell a difference in my hair after a few days. My hair felt softer and was shinier. Now that I have been using it for over a month, I’ve noticed a lot of new hair growth and I’m so happy! I’ve also noticed that it works really well in conjunction with my DIY dry shampoo to keep my scalp refreshed between washes. I’ll talk more about how to use it later in the post, but first, let’s talk about the ingredients and how to make this DIY refreshing scalp spray!

WHAT ARE THE BEST ESSENTIAL OILS FOR HAIR GROWTH?

Let’s first talk about some of the most effective essential oils that are beneficial for hair growth!

  • Rosemary: Rosemary essential oil helps to stimulate hair follicles, increase blood flow to the scalp and helps with hair growth.
  • Peppermint: Peppermint essential oil helps improve circulation of the scalp and can help promote hair growth.
  • Lavender: Lavender essential oil can help to soothe the scalp and help hair growth faster.
  • Cedarwood: Cedarwood essential oil can help to balance the oils on the scalp and promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.
  • Tea Tree: Tea tree essential oil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which can help improve the health of the scalp. It can help to remove debris from hair follicles to allow hair to grow easier. Tea tree can also help with dandruff.

WILL THIS HAIR GROWTH SPRAY WORK FOR ME?

Although I wish I could say this spray will help anyone with hair growth, the reality is that it won’t work for everyone. It can be great to help with hair loss after giving birth or for hair loss due to stress, but it’s not guaranteed. If you have an underlying problem that is causing your hair loss, likely that will need to be addressed before something like this spray will work. HOWEVER, this spray still works great at refreshing your scalp and helping your hair last longer between washes! So that’s a big win in my opinion!

HOW TO MAKE DIY SCALP REFRESHING SPRAY

TOOLS YOU MAY NEED

INGREDIENTS

  • 10 drops cedarwood EO
  • 10 drops peppermint EO
  • 10 drops rosemary EO
  • 5 drops lavender EO
  • 5 drops tea tree EO
  • 1 tsp witch hazel*
  • Filtered water

*If you have dry skin, you may want to use an alcohol free witch hazel.

DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING SCALP REFRESHING SPRAY

To a 2 oz glass bottle, add in all the essential oils.

Next, add in the witch hazel. I just do a full squirt of it, but you could measure 1 tsp out.

Fill the rest of the bottle with filtered, distilled or boiled and then cooled water.

Add the sprayer on top, give it a shake and it’s ready to use!

HOW TO USE DIY SCALP REFRESHING SPRAY

  • Shake the spray bottle, then apply the DIY scalp refreshing spray to your roots and gently massage or comb it through the hair.
  • It can be applied on damp or dry hair. If using on damp hair, allow the hair to air dry before applying any dry shampoo. You could also dry the hair with a hair dryer if needed.
  • Reapply once or twice more throughout the day for best results, especially for hair growth.
  • If your goal is not hair growth, but simply for refreshing your hair, I recommend using before styling. This spray will help to loosen up dirt and debris from the scalp and give it a nice refresh!

NOTES

  • If you have a dry scalp, I recommend using an alcohol free witch hazel.
  • Add in a pinch of epsom salt to help with a dry scalp.
  • You may notice some tingling when you first apply this spray due to the peppermint oil. Don’t worry, it will subside quickly!
  • If you find the spray too strong, you can add the same ingredients to a 4 oz bottle instead. You can also double the recipe and add it to a larger 16 oz bottle.
  • This spray should not be used on children under the age of six due to the rosemary and peppermint essential oils. Also beware if you are pregnant or nursing. You may want to adjust the ingredients to suit your needs.
  • For kids, I recommend going with the diluted version in the 4 oz spray bottle, but use your own discretion.

This sounds fabulous! I already have the brown glass spray bottles, three of the five essential oils, and Witch Hazel. Just order the last two essential oils on Amazon, and I'll be ready to give this a try in no time. Thanks for the great tip!
