How to Make a DIY Hoodie Dress Out of an Oversized Jacket in 3 Steps

Welcome, everyone! Today we’ll be upcycling an oversized jacket and transforming it into a trendy hoodie dress. I can’t wait to show you how to make a DIY hoodie dress, and of course, the beautiful result! Let’s get sewing!
Tools and materials:
- Oversized hoodie
- Fitted bodycon dress
- Normal-sized jacket
- Sewing machine
- Pins
- Thread
- Scissors
- Marker
1. Make the bodycon dress pattern
Turn your jacket inside out, pull up the zipper, and lay it flat.
Next, line the dress to the center of the jacket. Align the dress to the jacket’s collar. It’s fine if it doesn’t go up to the shoulders; just ensure it’s centered.
Tip: Be mindful of the fabrics you’re working with. My dress is tight-fitting and super-stretchy, so I’m stretching it out as much as possible on the non-stretchy jacket. Like this, it’ll have room to breathe.
Lay out the other jacket you have right on top. Match the jacket's collar, shoulders, and bottom to the oversized jacket.
Now that you have all the garments lined up get out your handy fabric or any washable marker and start tracing the jackets’ sleeves. Ensure that you leave a little seam allowance (½“) for this part and use a ruler if needed.
Try leaving some room by the hip area, especially if you’re curvy.
Now, place pins along the lines you just drew. I suggest pinning on the inside (the part you’ll keep) and not on the outside, as I have.
2. Cut the bodycon dress pattern
Now, cut out the pattern. If you want to be cautious, you can cut a little bit outside of the line. This way, if you don’t cut correctly, you’ll have room to fix it later.
If you pinned the fabric on the outside (like me), go ahead and re-pin along the edges, making sure the edges match up for a nice, clean seam.
3. Sew the bodycon dress
Ok, let’s get sewing! Use a straight stitch all the way around the edges. It might get tricky when you get to the curve, so take your time to round that off.
This is what you should have: a beautiful and nice straight seam!
And we are done! You now have a bodycon jacket dress that fits nicely and snugly!

Yay! What do you think of this fantastic upcycle? You can pair this DIY hoodie dress with a pair of leggings or jeans. If you’re feeling up to it, you could even wear it as is, depending on the length of the jacket itself.
Thanks for joining me on this DIY hoodie dress tutorial; I hope you have some inspiration to make your own.
