How to Dye Your Dress Ombre at Home
I made a white cotton dress and it seemed a bit bland.
I was inspired by an ombre dress I saw online. So here’s how to ombre dye a dress easily and without too much mess.
Tools and materials:
- White cotton garment
- Fabric dye in 4 colors
- Color fixative
- Dish soap
- Salt
- Bucket
- Protective gloves
- Stirrer
1. Wet the dress
Soak the dress well in cold water and wring it out.
2. Mix the first color
Wear protective gloves! Add boiling water to a plastic container. The first one I used was too big, so I switched to a bucket for the other colors.
I used about a quarter of the dye each time. Stir it into the water with some dish soap and salt, as directed on the dye bottle.
3. Add the dress
Lower the bottom section of the dress into the dye. Make sure it’s fully covered and leave it for 20 to 25 minutes.
4. Rinse
Rinse out the excess dye from the dress in cold water between colors.
5. Other colors
Mix the dye in the same way as before for each color.
Lower the portion of the dress you want to dye into it without overlapping the previous section.
I didn’t leave the top section in as long, because it’s a darker color.
6. Fix the color
Mix the color fixative as directed and leave the dress to soak in it.
Rinse the dress again afterwards, then wash it in cold water and dry naturally.
