How To Take In a Dress on Your Own at Home
Today I will show you how to easily take in a dress to fit you perfectly. You can alter any dress that doesn't have side zipper the process are all the same.
This is the dress I wanted to take in to make it more flattering and to be honest wearable. I made this dress a few weeks ago using a sewing pattern M8033 but the final dress was too big on me.
The first thing I did was seam ripped the sleeves, since I will be taking in the dress from the side seams.
Next, I tried on the dress to figure out how much I need to take in. I started when 1 inch on both sides then I baste stitch it first to make sure it is the right fit for me. After I tried it on I decided to add another 1/2 an inch to make it a perfect fit. All in all I took in 1 1/2 inches on both side seams.
After I am satisfied with the fit, I sewn it permanently just following the baste stitch I made earlier while I was adjusting the side seams.
I cut off the excess fabric on each sides to get rid of the bulkiness along the waistline. Before you do this be sure that you are absolutely happy with the fit. Remember measure twice cut once!
Now, it's time so sew the sleeves back on. It's normal that it will not fit in the armholes anymore since we adjusted it. Don't fret you can easily gather the sleeves to make it fit in the armholes again.
Sew along the armhole to join the sleeve. Repeat the same on the other side and you are done!
This is the final dress, now it looks so much better than before. You can use the same process on taking in a dress that doesn't have zipper on the side.
