Hey, fashionistas! Here is a super easy quick way on how to sew a tube dress for beginners. I started sewing about a year ago so I am also a beginner and wanted to share this tube dress sewing pattern with you!

I bought a remnant (a piece that’s at the end of the bolt) of stretchy fabric for really cheap that's perfect for this project. Come join me as I show you how to make a DIY tube dress!

Tools and materials:

  • Stretch fabric to fit your body (try to get 4-way stretch)
  • Cutting mat or smooth flat surface
  • Rotary cutter
  • Your own well-fitting dress to serve as a pattern
  • Something to hold the fabric down when cutting
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
Cutting the selvage off the fabric

I used a fabric remnant so I cut the selvage away first.

Making the tube dress sewing pattern

1. Make the pattern

Open the fabric right side down. Measure a straight line in the center. The fabric I used has a 4-way stretch, which means it will stretch in all directions. If you aren’t using 4-way stretch fabric, make sure your fabric stretches the correct way before cutting.

Cut the fabric on the center line.

Lay the 2 pieces of fabric with the right sides together and make sure they are perfectly aligned.

Lay your dress on top to serve as a pattern. Make sure the area where you’re going to cut is flat. Use the rotary cutter.

When you cut, leave a small amount of seam allowance (about ½ an inch). You won’t need much if your fabric is like mine and super stretchy. Remove your dress from the fabric.

Once half the dress is cut, fold it to make sure it is symmetrical. Put on a heavy object to make sure the fabric stays put.

Do a straight cut all the way around with no seam allowance as it was added on the other side.

2. Sew the dress

Make sure the right sides are facing in. Pin both sides together.

Once that’s sewn, you’re all done! You don’t even need to hem the top or bottom, as this type of stretch fabric doesn’t fray.
