Each year when winter hits I’m always surprised at just how dry my skin can get. I’m one of those unlucky people who’s skin cracks and itches all the way until spring without much relief. I feel like I used every moisturizer out there and didn’t find real relief until I began making my own beauty products.

Like most cosmetics, our beauty products are packed with fillers, chemicals, and other mystery ingredients. These fillers just take up valuable space in our bottles so the high-impact (yet more expensive ingredients) like Shea butter and coconut oil are still included- yet don’t make as big an impact. When you take a look at the inexpensive beauty products you already have, you’ll often see the bragged-about ingredients closer to the bottom of the ingredient list. They likely will not be in the top 3.

That’s why today’s DIY body butter comes with simple, straightforward ingredients. The best part? Aside from essential oils, this recipe only calls for three ingredients. Three.

I made this DIY body butter for the first time about a month ago and loved it so much I just had to perfect the recipe and share it! My skin has never had a winter with such soft skin. Since there are no fillers and extra ingredients, it’s even more nourishing than my old, store-bought brand. The decadent peppermint fragrance is extra festive and always makes me feel like I just left the spa.

Note: If you have incredibly sensitive skin, try this recipe first without any essential oils or fragrances. Then, do a little research to decide which oils are best for your unique skin.

How To Make DIY Body Butter

To begin, melt the Shea butter and coconut oil on a double broiler over medium heat. Since I don’t have a double broiler, you can just take a pot of water and stack a glass or metal bowl inside. The entire purpose is to get the heat from the boiling water to melt the oils evenly rather than burn on the stove. Stir as the mixture is melting and then remove from the heat once it’s completely melted.

Once the Shea butter and coconut oil cool to room temperature, add the Avocado oil and essential oils. I added 40 drops of peppermint essential oil and 25 drops of cedar wood oil. I know that sounds like a lot, but using this amount creates a light, fragrance that was still diluted enough for my sensitive skin. Stir to mix and then let cool until it becomes opaque. I set my bowl in the refrigerator to speed up the process.

Once your DIY body butter is cooled, it’s time to mix and whip! Use a standard hand mixer to blend until you like the texture. The longer you mix, the fluffier and more “whipped” your body butter will be.

I mixed mine for about 20 minutes to create the ultra-light, fluffy consistency but the first time, only mixed for about 5 and had a more solid texture.

Now spoon it into a bottle and enjoy! I filled 3 of these Plastic Jars with one batch after whipping the body butter to double it’s liquid size. I plan on saving one, and giving a few to some friends before I make more!

To make the DIY body butter even cuter, I created these simple, printable labels that you can print out and tape to your bottles. I think the label makes it a cute little gift don’t you?
