Here’s a fun post with different outfits for those wondering What to Wear on a Fall Road Trip. As I mentioned on my previous blog, “ My Fun Fall Foliage Trip around Lake Michigan”, Mr. G.Q. and I went for a five night trip recently. We drove every day anywhere from three to six hours, so every outfit had to be comfy, but also cute! So here’s what I wore:

What to Wear on a Fall Road Trip

My first look is a bright pink “scuba jacket” from Talbots. It’s a lovely mid-weight layer that packs easily without wrinkling. I zipped it over a ribbed “Arlette” turtleneck which is a classic item from J. McLauglin. They carry a version of this top every fall and what is especially neat is there are three gold buttons on the cuffs.

My leggings are by Lysse and are black pointe which is a lovely heavier knit than most leggings. They have a flattering seam down the front of the legs that give a bit of structure. My hat is a washed black baseball cap from Magnolia Farms and I ended up wearing it a lot due to the windy, cold weather. My r unning shoes are by Brooks and are terrific for site-seeing.

This second look was for dinner one night. I paired a green camo black lace edged camisole with a black cashmere Lands End cardigan and black AG velvet jean leggings. My earrings are simple silver hoops, my necklace is a green chunky statement piece from Francesca’s and my black clutch is from Anne Klein.

Lastly, my black-capped-toe ballet flats are from AGL. To duplicate this look you could use any black cardigan or blazer over most black pants. What pulls the look together is the group of accessories. When you’re shopping watch for fun necklaces, earrings, scarves, etc. They’re worth the money especially if you store them in an easily accessible, visible way. (Stay tuned for a closet organizing blog soon…)

Above is outfit number three. Since I LOVE saturated colors, this one is my favorite. The star of the show is a gorgeous cotton long-sleeved Talbots tee worn under an Evereve vegan black moto jacket. Sometimes these jackets can look a bit too tough, but by pairing it with the feminine tee and scarf, I think a neat balance is struck.

The black knit pants are by JJill and pack perfectly. My silk scarf is twenty plus years old. I truly never discard my silk scarves because I always find a way to use them in new ways from year to year. My tote is a reversible black to brown Nordstrom tote that readily accommodated numerous trips from the car and to the various hotel rooms. My black suede booties are by Aquatalia which has especially great waterproofing to their boots.

Outfit number four is a layered look with a black Talbots zipped puffer vest over an Evereve Plaid boyfriend shirt. The burgundy turtleneck is also from Evereve and is a great thin layering piece. My jeans are this season’s Old Navy Rockstar Super Skinny Mid-rise jeans. I love the bit of stretch as well as the dark wash. Dark washed denim is my go to color as it goes with everything and can readily look both dressy and casual depending on the outfit.

My boots are honey-colored suede booties by Blondo. They’re extremely comfortable and waterproof. My crossbody bag is black nylon with brown leather trim and it’s by Michael Kors. My belt is Jcrew and is a little touch of leopard. Wearing the vest is smart on a trip as it’s warm and can layer under a trench coat if need be. Also it completes the outfit if just wearing the plaid shirt and jeans.

In my fifth outfit, I wore the black Talbots puffer vest over an Old Navy grey and white striped tunic. My scarf is from Ann Taylor and brings attention to my face. For vertical interest I wore a long lucite and silver chain necklace that was a gift from my sweet friend Molly. My leggings are black ultrasuede Lysse and they added nice texture to the outfit. My boots are the black suede Aquatalia booties.

Here’s my sixth and last outfit. It involves a green-yellow oversized boxy turtleneck from Evereve that I popped on over the b lack Lysse pointe leggings and the black Aquatalia booties. My fun necklace is from Molly again and the black trench is from Talbots. I would strongly recommend you take such layers as a down vest and a trench coat when traveling in the Midwest during the fall.

I ended up layering the vest under the coat, OVER all these outfits whenever we went sightseeing or shopping as it was so cold, windy, and/or wet. It’s an easy way to be comfy and prepared. In addition, since we spent our time in four different hotels, I found it easy and practical to pack each day’s outfits in individual big ziplocs. That way all I had to do at each stop was pull out the next one and I was good to go.

So there you have it. Six fun fall outfits for a fall road trip. I liked all of my outfits and actually wore everything that I packed. Let me know in the comments below which outfit you liked best.
