Flaxseed gel is my number one go-to product for fine, wavy, or curly hair.

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to create flaxseed gel for curly hair.

I’ll teach you how to give it a longer shelf life, and how to avoid that nasty smell it creates after having it for only a few weeks.

Let’s jump right into it!

Tools and materials:

  • Flaxseed
  • Empty bottle
  • Organic essential oil
  • Spatula for mixing
  • Pipette
  • Stocking
  • Measuring cup
Gathering materials

1. Gather your materials

You’ll need 1 cup of flaxseeds, an empty bottle to put your gel in, organic essential oil.

I’m using lavender, a spatula, a pipette, a stocking, and a measuring cup.

Adding flaxseeds

2. Add water and flaxseed oil to a pot

Add 2 cups of water to your one cup of flaxseeds. The ratio is 2:1. This is going to give us about 12 ounces of gel.

Adding essential oils

3. Add essential oils

Add about half a teaspoon of essential oil to the pot. If you have a large bottle like me, use the pipette for this.

You don’t have to use essential oils, but it helps with the smell.

Before using it, make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction to that oil, especially since you’re not using it with a carrier oil.

Boiling

4. Boil

Let the water boil. Once it’s boiled, the flaxseed is going to release its gel and you’ll see a white mucus at the top of the water.

You can turn off the stove at this point, and let the flaxseed cool down.

Pouring mixture

5. Pour the flaxseed over the stocking

Place the stocking over your measuring cup. This is where you’ll pour the cooled flaxseed.

It’s important you let the flaxseed cool down or you’ll burn yourself.

If it’s too hard after cooling, add a little bit of water and mix it up until you get a liquid texture.

Pressing gel out

6. Press the gel into the measuring cup

Press the gel out of the seeds.

You’ll have to use your muscles here and it can get a little messy, so arm yourself with a paper towel and patience.

Don’t use too much pressure, or you can rip the stocking.

Emptying stocking

7. Empty and cleanse your stocking and repeat

Once you’ve pressed as much gel as you can, empty your stocking into a separate bowl.

Emptying stocking

Rinse your stocking into a bowl of water, and repeat the process until you’ve finished pressing the gel.

Bottling

8. Bottle

Use a funnel to help bottle up the flaxseed gel.

I recommend using old shampoo or hair mask bottles because it’s easier to control the dosage.

Spray gel

9. Repress the remaining flaxseed for a spray gel (bonus!)

Add about 1 cup of water to the remaining flaxseed, and mix it up very well until you get a nice consistency.

Press this mixture a second time for a watered-down version of your first press.

Add it to a spray bottle, and you can use this bonus product on day 2 curls to refresh your curls and give it that bounce back.

You’ll also get a nice hold, definition, and shine to your hair.

Flaxseed gel for curly hair

That’s it! To keep this flaxseed gel for curly hair as long as possible, I highly recommend you keep it in your fridge (not the freezer).

It can stay in your fridge for up to six months. Let me know your experiences with flaxseed gel in the comments below.
