How to Clean Your Hair Brushes

Are your brushes full of hair and other gunk? Are they starting to feel icky to use?


You’re in luck because, in this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to clean your hair brushes. Follow along!

Tools and materials:

  • Hairbrush
  • Shampoo
  • Towel

Removing hair

1. Remove hair

Start by removing all loose hair stuck in the brush as well as any debris.

2. Fill sink

Fill your sink with warm water and shampoo (or another mild soap, depending on the material of your brush’s handle and bristles).

3. Leave brush in water

Take your brush, move it around in the water, and then drop it in.


Let it sit for 10 minutes.

4. Remove hair

Once complete, remove the hairbrush from the sink and rinse it thoroughly so all of the shampoo comes off.


This process should be able to loosen up any of the remaining gunk or hair that is stuck.


Go ahead and pick it out with your fingers or a toothpick or use a comb to help you.

5. Let dry

Squeeze out any excess water, comb the bristles, and let the brush air dry, bristle side down.

Now you have a nice clean brush, free of hair and gunk, that you can feel happy about using.
