How to Get Long Healthy Hair Naturally
I often get asked about my natural hair care routine and how I grew my hair to waist length without it suffering from damage, breakage, or dry, split ends.
So, I thought I’d share my full hair care regime with you. It is completely natural and super simple.
Tools and materials:
- Natural oil
- Comb
- Natural shampoo bar
- Natural hair serum
1. Massage scalp with oil
Before you wash your hair, massage your scalp with a natural vegetable oil.
I either go for rosemary-infused olive oil or a coconut oil hair mask.
Applying oil to the scalp helps to promote hair growth, prevents premature graying, and makes hair soft and glossy.
Comb the oil through to coat each strand of hair evenly.
Then leave it in your hair for three hours.
2. Wash out oil
After the allotted time, wash out the oil with warm water (it does take a couple of washes to remove the oil from my hair completely).
3. Wash hair with shampoo
When it comes to washing my hair, I usually use a natural shampoo bar specified for oily hair.
Wash your hair in the shower, shampooing only the roots and massaging your scalp well to remove any oils and impurities before rinsing.
4. Dry hair
Dry your hair by placing a towel on it, but don’t rub your hair dry, as this could cause damage and breakage.
I haven’t used a blow dryer in years, nor any form of heat treatment on my hair, for that matter, such as a hair straightener or curler.
This has made all the difference in keeping my hair strong, healthy, and lush. I prefer to let my hair air-dry after using the towel.
5. Comb hair
Don’t comb your hair while it’s still wet to avoid hair damage and breakage, and avoid using a brush to detangle your hair.
Instead, after air drying your hair, use a clean, wide tooth comb.
6. Apply serum on ends
While split ends are inevitable when growing hair really long, applying a natural hair serum onto the ends of your hair regularly can be really helpful in minimizing the effects of split ends.
It will keep your hair looking healthy and strong even at the bottoms.
7. Tie up hair
Traction alopecia is a form of hair loss that can be brought on by always tying hair back too tight, leading to a receding hairline and overall hair loss.
To avoid this, I try to wear my hair in loose braids, a low ponytail or bun, or simply out and au naturel.
