How to Hem Flared Jeans & Keep the Original Hem
Welcome to my upcycling journey! Today, I will show you how to hem flared jeans and keep the original hem. This is such an easy way to hem your jeans; you won’t need to go to a tailor for this. One of the jeans I thrifted needed to be hemmed, so I decided to make this quick tutorial to show you how it’s done. Let’s go!
Tools and materials:
- Jeans
- Sewing machine
- Thread of choice
- Ruler
- Marker
- Scissors
- Pins
- Seam ripper
1. Measure the hem
Put on your jeans and fold them up to your desired length. Then make a mark. Based on my size, I’m going to cut off 2 inches.
Now, take them off and measure the mark with a ruler. I’m measuring 2 inches from the bottom of the pants.
Now, go ahead and draw a line but before that, ensure the back is folded down flat. If there are wrinkles, It will come out uneven.
2. Cut
Cut along the line you just drew.
Once that’s complete, trim out the excess from around the hem.
This is what you should have.
3. Seam rip the hem
With a seam ripper, remove the stitches from the hem. This will take around 10 minutes for each side.
This is how it should look afterward.
4. Repin the hem
To repin the hem, ensure the front (folded down) faces you and the back with frays placed in the back. Pin the hem around the bottom of the jeans, like a sandwich, so it covers the raw edge.
Here are the frays at the back.
5. Stitch the hem
Topstitch all around to secure the hem in place.
All done!
Just a note, the original thread is yellow, but I replaced it with white. Can you see the difference? You can always mimic the same design; it’s up to you, really. I love to lead when it comes to fashion, so I went for my own style.
