In this makeup tutorial, I'm going to show you how to do Maleficent Halloween makeup. Maleficent is one of my favorite characters. Today, we're going to create an authentic makeup look so that you can look exactly like Angelina Jolie did in the film.

Originally for this look, I sculpted prosthetic cheekbones to wear. Unfortunately, my skin reacted to the mastic glue that I used to apply the cheekbone pieces, so I didn't include them in the finished look.

Tools and materials:

Makeup

  • Primer
  • Brow powder
  • Eyeshadow
  • Gel eyeliner
  • Sculpt cream
  • False eyelashes
  • Highlighter
  • Lip liner
  • Lipstick
  • Contact lenses
  • Spoolie

Horns

  • Aluminum foil
  • Plastic cup
  • Expanding foam
  • Electrical tape

Headpiece

  • Wig cap
  • Cardboard
  • Sellotape
  • Post-it note
  • Electrical tape
Applying a light-colored primer

1. Primer

Start by using a skin base to get nice light skin. For Halloween, remember to take this paler color all down your neck and maybe even over your hands; anywhere that your skin is visible.

Filling in brows to create a high arch

2. Brows

Maleficent has quite villainous brows. Start by applying the powder at the top half of the brow, and create that nice pointed triangular shape at the arch. At the tail of the brow, pull it down from the arch in a straight line. That's going to create a more severe appearance.

Fill the front of the brow in brown first, then go in with a slightly lighter shade to soften it. Use a spoolie brush to comb through it all, making the color more uniform.

Applying eyeshadow to create a dramatic wing

3. Eyeshadow

Take a dark brown color and create a winged shape at the corner of your eye with a fine flat brush. Map the shape out, fill it in, and use a blending brush to soften the color.

Go back in with a smaller brush to reapply the color. Then, you're going to do the same process and blend it again. Doing this will create depth and intensity.

Next, take the same brown shadow underneath the lower lashes, line the wing again, and then take it straight down underneath the lower lashes in one smooth line. Run the blending brush along the line you've just created.

Apply a medium brown color on the mobile eyelid halfway across the eyelid from the outer corner.

Proceed to add a dark eyeshadow on the crease of your eyelid, take it up at an angle from the middle of the eye up towards the brow. Then apply a light brown color to the outer brow bone to make it slightly more prominent.

You also want to darken the socket line to make more of an angular shape.

Applying eyeliner for the Maleficent makeup

4. Eyeliner

The thinnest part of the eyeliner is right at the beginning, and it goes up in a straight line and then dips, creating a slight point.

To create a nice fluid wing, you want to start at the base and pull out your line. Then come back on yourself to thicken it and fill in-between. Once done, apply some false eyelashes.

How to apply sculpting cream

5. Sculpting cream

To start sculpting the face, take a sculpting cream and bring it down the nose. To sculpt the cheek area, draw the contour color from the top of the ear, down the cheekbone, towards the corner of the mouth but obviously going only halfway.

From where you stop halfway down your cheek, pull the line down towards your jawline. This is going to sink those areas replicating Maleficent's (and Angelina Jolie's) chiseled bone structure.

Applying highlighter above the eyebrows

6. Highlighter

Place some highlighter around the eyebrow bone and feather it out. Then take it across the top of the brow bone; this will help to give the eyebrows an even sharper effect.

Proceed to place some highlighter along the cheekbone and up towards the temple area. This is going to contrast against the brown contour color and really make the cheekbones pop. Finish by adding some highlight down the center of the nose.

Lining lips to an angular cupid's bow

7. Lips

Using a lip liner, enhance your cupid's bow by making your lips quite pointy and a bit more villainous, and take care to line them, so they are pristine and very precise. Then pop on some red lipstick.

8. Headpiece

First, put on a wig cap. I made a quick DIY headpiece for my pre-made horns to sit on just by measuring cardboard around my head. Then, a friend helped me secure the horns to the headpiece with black electrical tape, also covering the cardboard as we went along.

The front triangle is a post-it note covered in black electrical tape.

I made the horns by experimenting with expanding foam, plastic, and foil. It was a tricky trial-and-error and a little complex to explain, so I haven't included instructions here. You may want to buy horns or fashion them from a different costume to make things easier.

Maleficent Halloween makeup tutorial

That is the end of the Maleficent makeup tutorial. I look just like Angelina Jolie herself, and I'm super happy with how professional this looks. This makeup look does take quite a bit of time and requires a lot of focus, but the result is definitely worth it.
