How to Sew Palazzo Pants: A Complete Cutting and Sewing Guide
These relaxed palazzo pants are made from a soft, stretch viscose jersey that drapes and flows beautifully. And the palazzo trouser pattern is very easy to make.
The measurements I give are for size 38 European. For each size up or down, add or deduct half an inch (1 cm) at each side.
Tools and materials:
- Viscose jersey fabric
- 1.6 inch (4 cm) wide elastic
- Tailor’s chalk
- Measuring tape
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Pins
- Safety pin
- Sewing machine
1. Draft the pattern
Cut a rectangle from your fabric 39 inches (100 cm) wide by 60 inches (152 cm) long. Fold the fabric in half widthways and in half again.
Place it in front of you with the main fold towards you.
Measure 12 inches (31 cm) along the fold from the right edge and draw a line across the fabric at that level.
Draw an 11 inch (28 cm) long line from the fold along the right edge.
Join the end of this line to the first line and curve the corner where they intersect.
Place a mark on the left edge, 13.5 inches (34 cm) from the fold. Join this mark to the end of the first line.
Cut out the basic pants shape.
2. Shape the front
Unfold the fabric once.
Mark two fingers’ width down from the waist edge at the front crotch seam.
Draw a line from this point, tapering it to the back crotch, and cut it out.
Separate the back and front sections at the fold.
Draw a line one finger’s width wide along the inner front leg seam and cut it out.
Put the two back sections aside.
3. Side pockets
Cut a strip of fabric 33.5 inches (85 cm) long by 10 inches (25 cm) wide.
Fold it in half widthways twice.
Place the folded fabric under the outside leg seam of the front sections, with the main fold towards you.
Trim the waist and side edges to size.
Cut the inner lower edge into a curve.
Place two of the four pocket pieces aside.
Mark 2.4 inches (6 cm) across the waist edge from the side seam and 5 inches (13 cm) down the side seam from the waist.
Join the marks with a curve for the pocket opening and cut it out through all layers.
Mark the wrong sides of the pocket bags and the front pants.
Place a pocket piece on front pants with the right sides together, lining up the cut-out.
Sew together along the curved edge.
Fold the pocket to the inside and topstitch the seam.
Place a pocket piece without the cut-out over the attached pocket with the right sides facing and join the curved seam.
Sew the pocket to the pants at the top and outside edges, either side of the cut-out.
Add a pocket to the other front section in the same way.
4. Assemble the pants
Place one back and one front together with the right sides facing and sew the outer leg seam.
Lay the two sections together and join the front and back crotch seams, with the right sides facing.
Refold the pants with the crotch seams in the center and sew the inner leg seams.
5. Waistband
Cut a piece of fabric 5 inches (13 cm) wide and the length of the waist edge plus a seam allowance. Join the two short ends.
Open the seam and fold the band in half lengthways with the wrong side inside.
Allowing for a seam allowance at the raw edges, mark the width of the elastic on the band.
Sew around the band at the level of the mark.
Sew the band to the inside of the waist edge, with the band seam at the center back.
Leave a small opening near the seam.
Feed the elastic through the opening between the two rows of stitching.
Overlap the ends and sew them together then sew the opening closed.
7. Finishing
Cut two strips of fabric 3.2 inches (8 cm) wide by 23 inches (60 cm) long.
Fold each in half lengthways with the right side inside and sew the long edge and one short edge.
Turn the strips right side out.
Attach the open end to the front waistband at the side seam with the tie facing outwards.
Fold the tie towards the front and sew another line of stitches to hide the raw edge.
Turn up and sew a double hem on each leg.
