Tools and materials:

  • Irish sea moss

  • Flax seeds
  • Boiling hot water
  • Heat-safe bowl
  • Applicator bottle

Boiling water in a pan

1. Boil water

Start by boiling 2 cups of water.

Adding a tablespoon of flaxseeds

2. Add flaxseeds

Add 1 tablespoon of flaxseeds. Flaxseeds reduce dryness, help nourish the hair follicles, and make your hair softer and smoother.

Measuring out a tablespoon of sea moss

3. Add sea moss

Next, add a tablespoon of sea moss. Sea moss is packed with protein, vitamins, and 92 essential minerals. It also has a slippery consistency that helps detangle and nourish the hair.

4. Add marshmallow root

Then, add a tablespoon of marshmallow root. Similar to the sea moss, marshmallow root also has a slippery consistency to make detangling easy.

Additionally, it soothes dry and itchy scalps and promotes hair growth.

5. Add water

Add a cup of the hot water, mix well, then allow the mixture to set for 30 minutes. After half an hour, the mixture should have thickened considerably.

Blending the ingredients to make DIY pre-poo

6. Blend

Pour the mixture into the blender and blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy.

7. Pour into nut milk bag

Place your nut milk bag into your heat-safe bowl and pour the mixture into the bag. Be careful not to spill any of it and scrape the sides of the blender so you’re getting all of the mixture.

Straining the mixture

8. Strain

Once the mixture is entirely in the bag, squeeze the bag to strain the mixture through the bag and into the heat-safe bowl. This will get messy, but that’s okay. Keep going until it’s all out.

Pouring the mixture into an applicator bottle

9. Decant

Pour the mixture into an applicator bottle, ready for use.

Adding the remaining water

10. Dilute

Add the remaining cup of water to the mixture.

Adding lavender oil to the mixture

11. Add essential oils

Add 10 drops of lavender oil and 10 drops of rosemary oil.

Lavender oil is a soothing and relaxing fragrance that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Rosemary oil discourages hair loss, promotes hair growth, and increases hair thickness.

Shaking the DIY pre-poo and hair detangler

12. Add cap and shake

A tip to keep it from spilling is to place your finger over the applicator tip to prevent the mixture from flying out.

That’s it! After a little while, it’ll thicken up and once it does, it’s ready to use. I recommend refrigerating between uses to keep this DIY pre-poo for curly hair as fresh as possible.
