Here, I’m going to show you some DIY boots with metal leaf that will create a liquid gold finish.

If you love everything bright and shiny, this has your name written all over it.

Follow along as we upcycle a pair of basic boots and add some gold to them!

Tools and materials:

  • Leather boots
  • Metal leaf adhesive
  • Gold leaf sheets
  • Paintbrushes
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Black paint
  • Scissors
Applying adhesive

1. Apply adhesive

Start by applying the metal leaf adhesive to your boots with a paintbrush. Then, let it dry until it becomes clear.

2. Apply gold leaf

Next, cover anywhere where you placed adhesive by putting a gold leaf sheet onto it. It's going to stick and cling to the adhesive.

The best way to apply the gold leaf is to take the little sheet on the back of the gold leaf, open it up, and use it as an application process.

You're just going to open it and lay it flat onto the boots.

3. Stipple gold leaf on

Once it's entirely covered, grab your brush that has no glue on it and use it to stipple by pushing the gold leaf into the adhesive and fusing it into the leather.

Anywhere that it's gold leaf on top of gold leaf, meaning there's no adhesive underneath it, the gold leaf piece will flake off.

You can then use those pieces to patch in tiny little areas where there may have been a hole, or there's not a seamless effect.

4. Patch over empty spots

I recommend taking some of the gold leaf sheets and cutting them in half.

This will give you little skinny rectangles that you can use for smaller patches instead of putting an entire one on.

5. Cover the other side of the boot

Proceed to do the other side of the boot.

6. Cover the heel

Then do the heel.

Buffing boots

7. Buff the boots

Buff the boots by taking a microfiber cloth and rubbing it on them. This is when the high shine really starts to show up.

I would recommend doing it outside because it gets very flaky, and the gold leaf likes to stick to things even if there isn't adhesive underneath.

Painting sole

8. Paint the sole

To get rid of any gold leaf stuck to the sole, go in with some black paint and a fine paintbrush, and you can just erase the excess gold leaf with paint.

These boots are sure to turn a few heads - they are so bright, shiny, and totally amazing. Give this DIY a go for yourself!

Won't the gold leaf wear off in time. or do you put a clear acrylic gloss over the entire boot?
