Today, I'm making an easy skirt pattern for a DIY mini skirt.

It's a 4-piece A-line skirt and I used 22 inch (55 cm) wide satin fabric for mine and added a lace trim. The measurements given are for size 36 - 38.

So, if you want to see how to sew an easy mini skirt and get some sewing tips and tricks along the way, follow along!

Tools and materials:

  • 60 inches (144 cm) of 22 inch (55 cm) wide satin fabric, or similar
  • 25 inches (64 cm) of 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide elastic
  • Lace trim
  • Tape measure
  • Ruler
  • Pins
  • Chalk
  • Large safety pin
  • Overlocker or sewing machine
Preparing the fabric

1. Prepare fabric

Fold the fabric in half widthways and in half again, so you have 4 layers.

Trim off 4 inches (10 cm) from the width on one side so each layer is 18 in (45 cm) wide and 15 inches (38 cm) in length.

Lay the fabric out with the folded edge towards you and pin it through the layers so it doesn't slip.

2. Cut out skirt pieces

Mark 2.3 inches (6 cm) down from both the shorter edges on the same side and draw a slanted line across the fabric to connect each mark to its opposite corner.

Cutting out skirt pieces

Cut along both lines.

3. Shape waist and hem

Draw a slightly curved line 1/2 inch (1 cm) inside the waist edge and a second line just above the hem edge and cut along both lines.

Side seams

4. Side seams

Side seams

Pin the four pieces together along 3 of the side seams, then fold the joined pieces in half and pin the fourth seam.

Sew all 4 seams. taking a 1/2 inch (1 cm) seam allowance. Overlock or zigzag stitch along the raw edges of the seams and the hem and press all seams flat.

Creating the waistband

5. Waistband

Cut a rectangle of fabric 39 inches (100 cm) long and 3 inches (8 cm wide) from the piece you trimmed off earlier.

Fold it in half widthways and sew the short edges together. Fold it in half again and mark each quarter section.

Creating the waistband

Matching the marks to the side and center seams, pin the waistband to the skirt, right sides together, folding it in half lengthways as you go.

Sew the waistband in position, leaving an opening for the elastic.

Inserting the elastic

6. Insert elastic

Attach the safety pin to one end of the elastic and use it to feed the elastic through the waistband.

Overlap the ends of the elastic and sew them firmly together.

Inserting the elastic

Stitch the waistband closed, without sewing through the elastic.

7. Lower trim

I used 3 inch (8 cm) wide black lace for this and stitched it around the hem, right sides together.

Lower trim

Fold the trim down at the stitching line and top stitch on the skirt close to the edge on the right side.

Sew the ends of the trim together and press.
