Today’s tutorial is for those beginners that are looking for a nice and easy place to start. This tutorial is quick, simple, and still beautiful! I loved making and wearing this midi skirt and can’t believe how easy it is.

Tools and materials:

Midi skirt

Prepare your fabric

The first thing to do is measure your waist and desired length. Then, use those measurements (your waist measurement times 1.5 by your desired length) to cut out your fabric. Next, to begin sewing, fold your fabric over, wrong sides together. Pin your fabric in place and use a french seam to secure it. Once you’ve done that, pull your skirt inside out and restitch the edge to close up the raw edges.

Hem the top of the skirt

Hem the top of the skirt by folding it over half a centimeter (or about a quarter-inch) and stitching it all the way around. After that, fold the skirt over another half a centimeter and stitch all the way around again.

How to make an elastic midi skirt

Prepare the elastic

Take a piece of elastic - I’d recommended it being 2.5 centimeters (or about an inch) wide - and wrap it around your waist. Mark off your measurement and then subtract five centimeters (or about two inches) from that length and cut the elastic. Next, sew the ends of the elastic together by putting one end on top of the other and reverse stitching back and forth.

Find your four points

Align the elastic with the top edge of your skirt, starting with the secured end. You need to find the four edges of the elastic. To do this, pull your elastic flat and mark off both edges, then pull it in the other direction and mark off the two new edges. Use pins to mark off all four edges. Repeat this process to find the four points on the top of your skirt and align your pins.

Insert the elastic

To sew your elastic into the skirt, stretch the elastic as much as possible as you slide it through your sewing machine. Additionally, make sure that the elastic and the stitching are both right along the edge of the skirt.

Hem your skirt

Hem the skirt

Just like with the top of the skirt, hemming the bottom is done by folding the skirt up half a centimeter (or approximately a quarter-inch) and sewing all the way around, and then repeating the process. To finish, give the skirt a good iron by the hem and waistband.
