How to Make an Easy DIY Two-Piece Short Set Out of Old Sweatpants
Today, I’m going to be showing you how I took thrift store sweatpants and turned them into a DIY two-piece short set! So, stay tuned if you want to see how sewing two-piece sets can be quick and easy. Let's get started.
Tools and materials:
- Sweatpants
- Sewing machine
- Pins
- Scissors
- Matching thread
- Eyelet kit
- Cord or string
Here are the sweatpants I got from the thrift store.
1. Cut the pant legs to make shorts
To make the shorts, grab a magazine, place it on the leg part of the sweatpants and cut away. You can use any desired length; just make sure you cut straight.
Fold the pants in half and use the cut side as a guideline to cut the other side.
2. Roll the edges upwards
Next, roll the bottom edge upward to your desired length. You can sew the folds in place if you wish.
3. Cut the side seams of the pant legs open
For the top portion of this lovely DIY two-piece set, simply take the excess fabric from the sweatpants and cut it open along the side seams. Do this for both pant legs.
4. Sew the pant leg fabric together
Lay both pieces on top of each other, making sure they are right sides touching. Then, sew along the edge of one side of the fabric.
So, now when you open it up, you have one long piece to work with.
5. Cut off the cuffs
Cut along the perimeter of the fabric piece to make a rectangular shape.
6. Hem
To clean up the raggedy sides of the rectangle, fold in all four sides and pin. Then, sew to secure.
7. Trim the excess
As you can see, there is a lot of excess fabric. So, go ahead and cut it off.
8. Attach the eyelets
Next, attach eyelets on either side of the short ends. Make sure they are adjacent to each other. If you don’t know how to attach eyelets, watch this tutorial on how to insert an eyelet in fabric.
9. Thread cord to make the corset back
You can either use a cord or string to feed through the eyelets in a criss-cross method.
DIY two-piece short set tutorial
Here’s the final product! What do you think of this DIY two-piece short set? You can also wear it as a romper by lighting your shorts up slightly and adding a belt over.
As you can see, sewing two-piece sets is not that complex, and I actually think this is an excellent tutorial for beginners, too.
Let me know in the comments below what you think of this fantastic transformation.

Cute, but I would have liked to see the back with the eyelets finished. Very creative!
This is a great idea and it looks so smart.
