The Doodle T – TOP”

Simple Design. No Pattern. Easy to Sew. Fun to Wear.

1 Tablecloth and 2 Tea Towels. All in Cotton/Linen. Here’s a Quick Sketch…

THE TABLECLOTH – Use ONE HALF of a 72′ x 72″ Square Tablecloth for THE SLEEVES.

2 LINEN TEA TOWELS for THE BODY of the Top.

Linen Tea Towels. Amazon LINK.

A Quick Napkin-Sketch Design…Always the Best Kind!

READY, SET, GO!

Step 1: Cut a 72″Square Tablecloth in Half. One Piece will be the SLEEVES of the TOP.

The other Half of the Tablecloth will be a SKIRT.

See the Super Simple 10 Minute Skirt HERE.

Step 2: Cut the Tablecloth Half into 2 Equal Pieces. These are the 2 SLEEVES.

The SLEEVES. Floaty, Breezy, Poufy!

Step 3: On the CUT EDGE of each sleeve, Create a Channel for the Elastic for the Shoulder.

The Elastic will create gathers at the Shoulder.

Sew the Channel leaving a small space to insert the Elastic.

Step 4: THE BODY. (2 Tea Towels)

With Right Sides Together, Sew the BODY SIDES. Leave a 5″ Opening from the top for the Sleeves.

Step 5: Almost Done. This is the Tricky Part.

A. Position Each Sleeve by OVERLAPPING the Sleeves to the Front and Back of the Body. (See the Photo)

B. Each Sleeve should be positioned about 1/2 way down the Body. This will create a Square-Neckline.

C. The top of the sleeve elastic rests on the shoulder and keeps the top in place. No Wiggles off the shoulder.

D. Sew the Underside of each Sleeve Closed.

E. Sew the Section of the Sleeve that Overlaps the Top. Front and Back.

Stop sewing at the Section for the Shoulder Elastic.

Step 6: Insert Elastic in the Shoulder Channel of the Sleeve.

The elastic hugs the shoulder and stops at the top of the Neckline; front and back.

This is 1″ Wide Elastic. Use any width that suits you for the gathering.

Elastic. Amazon LINK.

Pull the Elastic tightly over the Shoulder. Sew to Secure the Elastic. This creates a Fun Poof Sleeve.

Step 7: Fit the Body (the Tea Towels). The Tea Towels are Voluminous. Sweet Pin Tucks will give a Great Fit.

Sew the Pin Tucks Down to Secure. Add as many Pin Tucks as You Need.

Step 8: Fit the Sleeve Length.

The sleeves can be very long. I needed to Cut the Sleeves, but I went a little crazy and cut off more than I planned.

Uh Oh. My wrist-length sleeve is now elbow-length. 🙂

Sew a Channel at the hem of the sleeve. Insert Elastic.

DONE!!

Hi Theresa - Excellent idea! In fact, that was my next project! I used the tablecloth because I loved the cotton fabric and the fun bits and bobs on it. Hope this new idea with all tea towels works! Thanks for stopping by! Jeanne - Doodle T and Me!
