Everyone knows that belts are a very important accessory. Besides holding up your pants, they can be really cute and add that extra pop of color and personality to your outfit. Who knew, though, that they can be so easy to make?! In this tutorial, I’ll teach you how to make your very own D-ring belts that you can customize to your taste and rock any outfit with!
To start off, you’ll want to measure the length you’re going to need the belt to be. So put on a pair of jeans, or pants with belt loops, and take your measuring tape around where the belt loops are. Use the measuring tape as a pseudo-belt to determine how much extra you want your belt to have. I like my belts to reach the next belt loop but not to hang too much past that, so I added about 5 cm past the second belt loop. Keep in mind that it’s always better to be too long than too short because you can always cut off the excess later. You also need to add a seam allowance, and I recommend six cm so that you have three on each side.
Take your ribbon and use the measuring tape to measure out the right amount, then cut the ribbon to that size. If you’re using a single-sided ribbon or tape, then cut down two strips in the same measurement.
Take the ribbon and feed it through both the loops of the D-ring. Then fold the raw edge under and slide it as close as you can to the D-buckle and pin it into place. Now take it to your sewing machine and stitch as close as you can to that fold, doing a reverse stitch back and forth. Then grab the end and feed it through, going over one buckle and under the other one. You don’t need to keep it together when you sew it, but you want to make sure you’re happy with the length.
If the ribbon you’re using only has print on one side, what you’ll want to do is cut to strips of the same ribbon to the same length. Then just stitch them together, wrong side to wrong side. Use a topstitch all the way down the ribbon and make sure to stitch as close to the edge as you can. Other than that, it’s the same process!
And you’re done! How easy was that?! I love these belts. They’re so cute and so easy to make it that I could just whip one up to match any given outfit if I wanted to. Aside from looking good, they’re also easy and practical to use, so I’m really happy with this project! There are so many styles and patterns you can choose from, and I’m dying to know which ones you choose! So definitely post a picture of your belts in the comments!
