I love a good fashion revamp! I had a plaid midi skirt that I just never wore anymore. Plaid is so in right now so rather than getting rid of the skirt, ai decided to totally transform it into the most on-trend and gorgeous mini skirt. This project was so much fun and was easy to do as well. I absolutely love the end result and this mini skirt has totally become one of my closet favorites! If you want to learn the ins and outs of this fashion DIY, follow my simple step-by-step tutorial below.

Measure

To get started on this amazing transformation, I marked on the skirt where I would later cut. It’s so important to choose a length that is perfect for you and one that you’re comfortable wearing.

Cut

It’s pretty easy to cut plaid since there is already a line to guide you, but I made sure to cut across my marked line just in case my eyes averted.

Once I had the perfect length, I made sure the skirt was right sides together and lined up the button with the buttonhole. I then cut the skirt in half.

I laid the two pieces, right sides together, and pinned the one side.

Baste

For this next step, I hopped over to my sewing machine and sewed a basting stitch. I like to baste first so that it’s easier to change if there are any mistakes.

After the baste stitch, I tried on the skirt to make sure it had the right fit. It seemed perfect so I sewed it together properly. I also backstitched the top and bottom of the side so that it would be secure and hold nicely.

In the next step, I pressed the seam open. This step may seem simple, but it definitely made the end result look a whole lot more professional!

I then cut the excess fabric off of the seam with pinking shears. In retrospect, I should have done this before sewing but you live and you learn. The pinking shears definitely helped give this cute skirt a cleaner finish.

I took the iron and pressed the hem from one side to the other. The plaid gave me perfect lines to follow so pressing with the iron was a lot easier.

Pressing the skirt definitely helped hold the fabric when it was time to sew the hem. I could sew the skirt open because it has a button-up front which was definitely easier than sewing a closed skirt. Once I had hemmed, I pressed the skirt to give it a nice, clean finish.
