With COVID keeping half our faces under masks, it’s time to get creative with what we're presenting to the world. This tutorial will teach you how to make a disposable mask that is still completely original and your own.

Tools and materials:

  • 2 paper towels (200 mm by 200 mm)
  • 7-inch garter
  • Stapler
  • Scotch tape
  • Scissors

Fold and tape

Lay one paper towel out flat and fold the other in half. Place the folded paper towel in the center of the full one and then fold the bottom edges over twice (pictured above). Grab some colorful tape (or regular tape) and tap the folded bottom down. Repeat this on the other side.

Add the creases

Turn the mask over and tape the edges that weren’t taped to keep the frame sturdy. Once that’s done, begin folding creases (do this by bringing the paper towel together, wrong sides touching, and then bringing the fold up so the right sides are touching). Now turn the mask over and fold the edges inwards once, stapling it in place to get rid of the raw edges.

Attach the garters

Staple your garter to the corners of the folded edges (making sure that the sharp edges of the staples are facing inwards). Fold the edges over again (to hide all the staples) and tape down the sides. Repeat the folding, and garter attaching process on the other side of the mask and then tape that side down too.

I love how this disposable mask tutorial allows me the freedom to get creative even when half my face is hidden. For really fun results play around with different tapes, patterns, and colors!
