DIY a Fabulous Fabric Facemask
Facemasks are an essential part of our everyday lives! Rather than have to buy and rebuy disposables, I decided to DIY my own super-cute reusable, fabric facemask. Not only is this mask better for the environment but it is extremely comfortable and breathable as well. If you want to learn the ins and outs of making this amazing fabric facemask, my tutorial is definitely for you! Follow my simple, step-by-step instructions, and get started on creating your own fabulous facemask.
Tools and materials:
- Paper
- Pen
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Fabric
- Pins
- Elastic
- Sewing machine
- Needle and thread
To get started on this DIY fabric facemask, start by drawing a 6-inch by 8-inch square on a piece of paper.
Then make a mark 5.5-inches inward on the top and bottom. Draw a line to connect the two markings. Then draw a second line one inch away from the first.
Mark the middle point on the second line. Then draw a line to connect that point to the top of the first line and another line to connect it to the bottom of the first line.
Freehand or use a circular shape to draw a curved line starting and ending at the top and bottom of the first line.
Next, mark 1.5-inches from the top and 1-inch from the bottom.
Connect the markings using a ruler to the first line.
Finally, it’s time to cut out your newly drafted pattern.
Place your fabric upside down and put your pattern pieces down. Then cut out four pieces to get started on making this awesome mask. Once you have cut all four pieces, make sure to check that they match up.
Lay two pairs of fabric down, with them facing, right sides together. Then hop on over to your sewing machine and sew the curved edges. If you prefer, hand sewing will work perfectly as well!
Take a pair of scissors and cut small slits along the curved edge of the fabric.
Place your two pieces, right sides together, and match up the seams. Once the seams are lined up, pin the fabric together.
Take a piece of elastic and cut it into 2, 7-inch pieces.
Pin the elastic in between the two layers of fabric, along the edge of the mask. Repeat the same step on the other side to create two earloops for your new fabric mask.
Take a marker and mark two dots, 2-inches apart. Then sew from the first dot and stop sewing when you reach the second dot. This step will not only sew your mask together but will sew the earloops in place as well.
To get the professional finish on this cute face mask, cut the corners and excess fabric along the edges. Then pull the mask right side out through the gap you left in the sewing. Push out all the corners and topstitch the gap closed. To get the perfect, neat, and clean finish, press the mask with an iron.
I love that I made this fun, reusable face mask! What fabric would you use to make this mask? Let me know in the comments below!
