Make a Gorgeous Maxi Dress Without Having to Sew a Stitch
I love a good maxi dress. They’re great and come in so many different styles. So I set off to try my hand at making my own maxi dress. One that can be tied in different styles to fit different occasions. The best part? No sewing necessary! In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through creating your own DIY no-sew maxi dress out of little more than fabric and scissors.
Tools and materials:
- Sewing pins
- Scissors
- Fabric scissors
- Ruler
- Fabric
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Printer paper
Fold a piece of printer paper in half lengthwise, then fold again, bringing the bottom to the top but not all the way. Draw a curve along the edge of the paper, and cut it out.
After you cut your paper, you’ll be left with a large oval. Fit your arm through it up to the shoulder and make sure it fits.
Take your measuring tape and measure the top of your back, under your armpits. Then write your measurements down on your folded pattern.
Take a lightweight fabric, like viscose or cotton jersey, and fold it in half. Then take half of the length you measured and place your pattern over the ruler so that the rule is in the center of the circle. Measure 12 cm (4.7”) from the top and pin your pattern down. Then cut out the fabric through the oval.
Unfold your fabric and put it on so that your arms are through the holes. Then take the ends of each side and cross them over your chest so each corner is now on the opposite side.
Now slip the ends you’re holding back through and cross them again. Then take the ends and tie them around your neck so that the dress is secured and you have a cute knot at the throat.
Another way to wear it is to grab one end from behind you and pull it to the other side. Then tuck it into the fabric at your shoulder. This will leave you with cute knots on either “sleeve.” Do the same thing on both sides, then tuck in the tie. To watch me do this, be sure to check out the video! You can also add a belt at the waist to complete this look!
That’s it! You now have a gorgeous maxi dress that you can wear in two different styles! I loved this project. I think it came out really cute and it was just so easy to do! The best part is that you can customize it to your tastes and personality by choosing a fabric that you love and really make it your own. I feel like I can so easily dress this up or down and therefore wear this to all sorts of occasions. How did yours come out? Show me down below!
