How to: Make a Face Mask and Scrunchie

Tools and materials:

• Satin fabric
• Measuring tape
• Tailor’s chalk
• Scissors
• Safety pin
• Elastic

Cut out your fabric 

The first step is to take your scrunchie measurements. As pictured above, I went with 4.5 inches by 23 inches, but you can go with any size that works best for you. Trace out your measurement using the tailor’s chalk and use some scissors to cut your fabric out. 

Finish the scrunchie 

Fold the fabric right sides together and sew the edges using a straight stitch. Then, using a safety pin as a guide, turn the fabric right side out. Next, cut a piece of elastic to seven inches and use the same safety pin to guide the elastic through the scrunchie. When the elastic is peeking out from both sides, pin the edges together and sew them using a straight stitch. Finally, close the gaps by placing one end into the other, folding over the raw edge, and sewing the scrunchie closed using a straight stitch. 

Cut out your fabric 

Place a plate (with a diameter between nine and ten inches) and trace the plate onto your fabric. Next, cut the circle out. If you are using a thin fabric (like me) cut out a second circle to use as a lining. 

Form your mask 

Fold both circles in half (right sides together) and cut along the fold. Now, fold the fabric in half again and cut against the fold again. After that, sew the curved edge together using a straight stitch. 

Connect the lining 

Unfold the pieces and place them together (the fabric and the lining) right sides together. Make sure the seams are perfectly aligned and then sew a straight stitch to connect both pieces. Remember to leave a small opening so that you will be able to turn the mask right side out later on.  

Close the gap 

Turn the mask right side out and close the hole by folding the raw edges in and adding a straight stitch. Next, fold the sides (forming a small tunnel for the elastic) and secure it using a straight stitch. 

Finish the face mask 

Take your elastic (10 inches) and secure it to a safety pin, then use that safety pin to pull the elastic through the tunnel. Finally, you can sew the edges of the elastics or simply tie a knot - allowing you to adjust the straps at a later point.
