An American in Paris

I visited France 15 years ago with my sister and three things rocked my world…

Bread, wine…

…and scarves!

I think I purchased 6 different scarves during the trip and effectively changed my entire wardrobe. My favorite scarves are the ones I bought from charming street vendors. One particular scarf was made of tiny colorful strings that were woven together in beautiful shades of blue. I felt so chic wearing it!

My sister bought one as well and, between eating bread and drinking wine, we were stylishly twinning it!

Plus, I could eat all the French bread I wanted, and the scarves still fit!

This was the beginning of my life as a scarf lover!

In this blog post, I’ll show you how to tie a purse scarf in a few easy steps using a Twilly scarf. So whether you’re a fashion-forward fashionista or a casual minimalist, I’m sure you’ll find a scarf-tying technique that you love.

What is a Twilly Scarf?

Have you ever heard of a Twilly scarf? I had seen them around for years, but I didn’t really know what they were.

Well, as it turns out, Twilly scarves are a very beautiful and very versatile accessory! A twilly scarf is a narrow, skinny scarf made of silk or satin, and they’re often printed with intricate patterns or designs.

Twilly scarves were first introduced by the French luxury brand Hermès in the late 1930s. They were originally designed to be used as a way to protect the handles of Hermès bags, but they quickly became popular as a fashion accessory.

So popular that they can be found at reasonable prices and often in coordinated sets! Be sure to check out my Amazon shop for skinny scarves in all sorts of colors and patterns!

How to Tie a Twilly Purse Scarf

Any of these methods can be achieved using square scarves. However, the look will be easier to achieve and have a more luxury appearance if you use a twilly scarf.

The Bow Tie Method

We all know how to tie our shoelaces…use the same bow with some skinny scarves!

  1. Fold the scarf in half lengthwise.
  2. Place the scarf around the side of the handle of your purse, with the folded edge at the top.
  3. Bring the ends of the scarf together and tie a knot at the top of the handle.
  4. Adjust the knot to your desired tightness.
  5. Create a bow by crossing the ends of the scarf over each other, so that the right end is on top of the left end.
  6. Bring the right end up and over the left end, forming a loop.
  7. Bring the right end back down through the loop, creating a bow.
  8. Adjust this cute bow to your desired size.

The Wrap-Around Method

  1. Tie one end of the scarf in a small knot to the base of the purse handle.
  2. Wrap the scarf around the handle of your purse two or three times, depending on how long your scarf is. If your scarf is long enough, wrap the entire purse handle and tie the loose end in a knot on the end of the handle.
  3. Adjust the knot to your desired tightness.
  4. Tuck the ends of the scarf under the knot.
