If you like vintage styles of clothing, this tutorial is definitely for you!

I'm going to show you three unusual vintage head scarf styles from the 1940s. All you need are two bandana size scarves in toning silky fabrics, and a wide velvet headband for one of the styles.

I love retro style and I especially love showing people how to tie a silk head scarf because you don't see women wearing one very often these days.

Tools and materials:

  • 2 silky scarves, 26 - 30 inches square
  • Wide velvet headband
Style 1: 1940s headband

Style 1: 1940s headband

This is a simple style that reminds me of 1940s headbands. They were shifted back a little on the head and usually had some detail or embellishment on top.

Fold your scarf in half diagonally, then fold the points back to the long edge.

Fold the scarf in half lengthways again, so you have a bandana with the point hidden.

Style 1: 1940s headband

Do the same with the other scarf, then loop the two together in the center.

Style 1: 1940s headband

Take one end in each hand and place the scarf on your head. Tie the two ends behind your neck under your hair and adjust the loop so it's in the center of your head.

Style 2: Knotted bow hairscarf

Style 2: Knotted bow hairscarf

Fold and loop the two scarves again as you did for style 1, but this time tie one in a loose knot over the other.

Make the knot look as nice as you can.

Style 2: Knotted bow hairscarf

Tie the second scarf behind your head as before, with the flat side of the knot on top.

Style 2: Knotted bow hairscarf

Then tie the knotted scarf behind your head separately or if it's not quite long enough, tuck the ends into the first scarf at the back.

Style 2: Knotted bow hairscarf

Pull the sides of the scarf open so the patterns are visible.

Style 3: Pretty turban style

Style 3: Pretty turban style

You'll need a velvet headband for this pretty turban style. Make sure the pile of the headband is on the outside, to stop the silky scarves from slipping.

Place the headband at the top of your forehead and fasten it horizontally around your head.

Style 3: Pretty turban style

Fold one scarf in half diagonally. Place the long end behind your head with the point facing forwards. Knot the ends over the band on your forehead.

Tuck the ends inside the scarf and bring the point forward and under the knot. Neaten the top edges of the turban.

Style 3: Pretty turban style

Fold the second scarf into a bandana and tuck it underneath the knot. Pull it through until you have an equal length on each side.

Style 3: Pretty turban style

Don't knot the second scarf or it will look too bulky.

Tie it into a bow over the knot of the turban and adjust the loops. Hide the ends under the turban, and you're ready to go!
