5 Pieces, 5 Outfits: How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe

In this 5 by 5 look book, I grab 5 pieces and make 5 different outfits from them. This is the best activity to do when stuck at home! It really makes you realize that there are so many ways to style just a few good pieces.

Capsule wardrobe 2020

Outfit 1

This tutorial is a bit of an ode to the slip dress. In this look, I am actually wearing two slip dresses at the same time.

What is a capsule wardrobe

The tie-dye slip dress has a cowl neck so I pinned the neckline to create more of a V shape so that it compliments the V neck of the charcoal slip dress. I dropped the adjustable straps so that some of the tie-dye dress is revealed. I paired the look with some mid-height boots and this fancy silver belt that I love!

Remove the belt

The belt was a bit too feminine for my style, so I lost it and changed the boots to make a look that was more suited to my edgy style.

Outfit 2

This is one of my favorite outfits and is just such an easy, go-to look if I am lost on what to wear. The slip dress and turtleneck are the same charcoal color and work so nicely together.

Wear monochromatic outfits

Simple, monochromatic outfits are always a safe bet and to casual up this look, I added my Blundstones.

Outfit 3

In this 3rd look, I am wearing an oversized jumper over the tie-dye dress. I love this dress for layering. I think the cowl neck is a bit much for me so I don’t usually wear the dress on its own which is why I love it with this jumper.

Outfit 4

Here I am wearing my sheer, charcoal turtleneck with pleat pants. These pants run quite large so I always like to cinch them at the waist which I am doing with this belt. This feature gives a bit of an 80s silhouette.

Outfit 5

In this last look. I pair the charcoal slip dress with the pleat pants. I am actually not a huge fan of this look so I decided to alter it a little.

How to build a capsule wardrobe

I pulled the slip dress up and tied it with a slanted knot to make it look like a top. It’s so easy to roll this fabric and tie it because silk is just so malleable. I would love to know which of these five looks you like best! Let me know in the comments below!
