How to Wear Long Cardigans
One of my most asked questions is how to style a long cardigan! As we head into cold weather, here’s everything you need to know for long cardigan outfits.
Let’s talk about how to style Long Cardigans
Long cardigan outfits are super in right now – but balancing proportions and layering with this look can be hard. I’m sharing some great tips on how to incorporate this style in your outfits!
How to wear a long cardigan with jeans and a top
Long cardigans are a great option with jeans and a top. You could do a blouse or a tee or a tank.
But pay attention to where your top underneath hits on your body. With a long cardigan, a top that hits closer to your natural waist will elongate your legs and give you a more proportional look.

How to wear a cardigan layered under a coat
On those cold days, layers are a must! You can absolutely layer a cardigan under a coat, but make sure the coat is at least a tiny bit longer than your long cardigan.
See in the left image how awkward it looks with the end of the cardigan hanging out of your coat? Avoid that by choosing a long coat.

How to wear a cardigan with a dress
This is probably the trickiest of the three. With flowy dresses (specifically long, flowy dresses…midi and maxi length), a long cardigan can quickly turn a look very “pioneer-ish.” They certainly CAN work, but play around with different lengths of cardigans and see what works for your particular dress.
There are two options…
- Choose a more fitted dress!
- Add a belt! Wrap the belt around your dress and your cardigan to create some shape.

Hi...
Thank You! I am trying to get better at putting myself together 🙂. I have gotten into the "jeans and t-shirt" phase and am having a tough time getting outside of THAT box. Your pics of what to do 'instead' are very helpful. I have saved this article and I will be referring back to it occasionally as I pull myself out of this 'fashion (or lack thereof) rut'.
Have a beautiful day!! 🌺
Love all of them, even the before.
