In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make a DIY Bo Peep costume, inspired by Little Bo Peep from Toy Story. This outfit cost me about $25 to make, which is a steal considering that online, it was $70 for a cheap version and $180 for the most expensive version that I saw!

This homemade Bo Peep costume looks very authentic, and it's a ton of fun to put together. You can also read my other tutorial on How to Make a DIY Woody Costume for Toy Story Cosplay or Halloween to make matching costumes with a partner or friend!

1. Make the top

Cut your white eyelet fabric into a strip, and then attach it to your blue t-shirt with some no-sew glue. Hot glue would also work. If I can avoid using my sewing machine, I will.

Something to keep in mind here is that this is a stretch t-shirt. So, if you're putting non-stretch fabric on top, you're going to lose some of the stretch, and it will be tighter on you.

2. Add lace trim

Finish off both sides with some lace trim. Simply hot glue it into place.

Making a cape for a homemade Bo Peep costume

3. Make the cape

For the cape, I'm using a blue blanket. It's not the right material, but it's the right color, so it will do. To give it more of a cape kind of look, fold it in half, and cut two corners off, making a little semi-circle. Finish off the raw edge with some more white lace.

Bo Peep's cape is actually lined with a white and pink polka dot fabric, but I didn't do that because you don't really see it.

She also has a little pink barrette which is how she fastens her cape around her neck. Take some pink felt, cut out the little flower barrette, and pin that into place when you pin the cape around your neck.

4. Make the sash and bow

Next, get your pink silky fabric scarf to use for Bo Peep's sash and bow. Cut the sash, so it's long enough to wrap around your waist and tie up at the back. The remaining fabric you can use to make her bow.

Cut off a little piece about 2 inches (5cm) wide, and then hem the seams with your hot glue gun, folding in both pieces. This piece will be the center of her bow that wraps around the center and holds it all in place.

The fabric of the bow is very floppy, and it is a very large bow, so you're going to stiffen it up with some cardboard. Take some flimsy cardboard, something you might get from a cereal box, and put it inside the fabric. Cut out a shape like the one shown in the picture.

The cardboard will then fold in half with the fabric. Fold the cardboard in half and cut it so that it is in a bow shape. Once you've cut it to size, glue it into the fabric and glue the fabric around the cardboard. Clean up and close all the seams with some hot glue.

Now you have a long piece of pink fabric, fold it inside. Because you cut out the center of the cardboard there, you can pinch it in between, cinch it, and make your bow. Hot glue the fabric strip tightly around the bow, so it doesn't come undone.

The cardboard makes it a very firm bow. You can just put some bobby pins in the back and pop the bow into your hair for the finished look.

Painting a cane for the DIY Bo Peep costume

5. Make the cane

Take your cane, get your acrylic paint and paint it a baby blue color. I did about two coats. She has something white wrapped around a portion of her cane, so use some white yarn and hot glue, wrap the yarn around, and glue it back into place.

6. Finishing details

Bo Peep has a little purple wristband, so I cut a strip of fabric out of some old leggings to put on my wrist. I'm also using a piece of white fabric from an old t-shirt to stretch around my arm because she has a broken arm in Toy Story 4.

Here is my homemade Bo Peep Halloween costume. It was very affordable to put together, as most of the materials for the outfit I thrifted, and I really enjoyed making the outfit.

I'm very happy with how the outfit turned out, and I love all of the creativity that went into it. Now all I need is my Woody, and I'll be good to go! Let me know what you think in the comments below.
