Homemade shower steamers are easy to make and create a spa-like aromatherapy shower experience. This simple recipe has no citric acid and includes peppermint for a sinus-clearing, awakening steamy shower.

No need to wait until you have time for a long, luxurious bath to get some relaxing aromatherapy in your life. Try a homemade shower steamer any day of the week and elevate your shower experience.

What is a Shower Steamer, Anyway?

A basic shower steamer combines Epsom salts, baking soda, and essential oils that combine with the steam from your shower and create full-body aromatherapy steam in your home shower.

The ingredients are molded together and hardened, similar to a bath bomb, and can be stored in your bathroom for easy use. Shower steamers dissolve in hot water during your shower.

It’s a great act of self-care when fighting a cold or allergies because the essential oil and steam can help relieve congestion. It’s also an excellent addition when you want to elevate your everyday shower to something that feels a bit more luxurious.

What do I need to Make Shower Steamers?

You’ll need just a handful of common ingredients to make your shower steamers. I love this simple recipe with no citric acid like many other recipes out there. Since we’re not going for that fizzy effect like in a bath bomb, I don’t think the citric acid is necessary, and it certainly makes the recipe easier!

Here’s what you’ll need for homemade shower steamers:

Epsom Salts – you can pick these up at most grocery or drug stores, and use them for several things, including a detoxifying Epsom salt bath or making your bath salts.

Baking Soda – the same stuff you keep in your kitchen helps hold these shower steamers together.

Essential Oil – I’m using peppermint essential oil in this recipe because I love peppermint’s sinus-clearing, eye-opening, tingly feeling. You can use any scent you prefer. Eucalyptus is also a popular choice for shower steamers, or try an immune-boosting blend or a relaxing blend.

Dried Peppermint Leaves – these are optional, but I love the look of the peppermint leaves in these shower steamers. They add a little extra peppermint umpf to the steamers, although most of the peppermint scent will come from the essential oil.

Can you make shower steamers without citric acid?

YES, absolutely! This shower steam recipe contains no citric acid, and they work beautifully. Citric acid is primarily used to make products like bath bombs or shower steamers fizzy. If you prefer a fizzy shower steamer, you’ll want a recipe with citric acid.

However, it’s unnecessary to make a shower steamer that does what it’s supposed to do….provide aromatherapy STEAM in the shower.

How to make shower steamers last longer

Read on if you’ve tried shower steamers before and noticed they disappear quickly. A shower steamer is not meant to last for the entire shower, but there are a few things you can do to help your shower steam reach its full potential.

Don’t place it under the water stream. This is the most critical piece to make sure your steamer gets steamy. You want the hot water to slowly melt away the shower steamer, releasing the essential oil goodness throughout your shower. Please place it in the corner of the shower, away from the direct stream of water. Allow it to dissolve slowly.

Keep your shower steamers somewhere dry when you’re not using them. You want them to stay dry until it’s steamy shower time.
