Easy Breezy DIY Dress

Today, I’m going to show you how to make an adorable sundress with tied shoulder straps and a slit in the front. This dress is so simple, you don’t even need a sewing machine! I hand-stitched this entire project. Check out this tutorial for step-by-step instructions on how to make your own dress.
Tools and materials:
- Cotton-spandex fabric
- Dress (to trace for pattern)
- Scissors
- Pins
- Measuring tape
- Fabric chalk
- Long stick
- Needle and thread
- Sewing machine (optional)
Cut around a dress
Use a dress you already own and fits you well as a pattern. Lay the dress on the fabric and cut around it, leaving a half-inch seam allowance all the way around.
Cut the second piece
Lay the first piece you cut on the fabric, right sides facing, and cut around it, exactly. No need to leave a seam allowance.
Sew the side seams
Pin and sew the side seams together.
Hem the top and bottom edges
Pin the hems along the top and bottom edges of the dress, and sew them down all the way around.
Cut strips for the shoulder straps
Cut two strips of fabric 18 inches long, and 3 inches wide.
Then cut each of those strips in half lengthwise. You should have four strips of fabric altogether.
Pin and sew the strips
Fold each strip of fabric in half lengthwise, right sides facing, and sew down the long edge and one short edge.
Turn the straps right side out
Using a long stick, push the closed end of the strip of fabric through to the open end and then pull the fabric out, turning the fabric right side out, with the seam hidden inside.
Pin and sew the straps in place
Pin the straps in place along the top edge of the dress, and sew them down. Make sure the corresponding straps in the front and the back of the dress are placed evenly.
Measure, mark, and cut the slit
Measure out where you want your slit, mark it with fabric chalk, and make a single cut in that spot.
Pin and hem the edges of the slit
Fold and pin the edges of the slit, and sew them down. Make sure to secure the top of the slit to prevent it from ripping.
Enjoy your gorgeous new sundress! If you use this tutorial, I’d love to see your results!
