How to Quickly & Easily Turn a Scarf Into a Dress

If you have a ton of scarves in your wardrobe, then you also have a ton of dresses! Follow along to learn how to turn a scarf into a dress with this tutorial. It’s very easy, with just one cut and a bit of sewing. So, if you’re ready to try it, let’s begin.
Tools and materials:
- Large scarf
- Scissors
- Sewing pins
- Dress form
- Thread
- Sewing machine
- Elastic strips
1. Check your scarf size
Fold your scarf in half widthwise and check that your folded scarf is the length you need for a dress.
Also make sure that the width of the scarf is wide enough to reach from side to side at your waist and hips. The scarf should be wider than the widest part of your body.
2. Cut your scarf
Lay your folded scarf flat and cut it into two pieces by cutting on the fold.
3. Hem the top of the dress
Fold and pin down the top edges of both pieces of your dress at least 2 inches.
Sew that top hem along the folded edge.
4. Fashion the cowl neckline
Drape the front of your dress on a dress form, with the wrong side of your dress facing out. Pin the dress to the dress form at the shoulders.
5. Adjust the sizing
If your fabric is a bit too wide, cut some off one side of the front and back pieces evenly.
6. Pin and sew the side seams
After you have adjusted the width, pin the front piece back on the form and pin the back piece onto the form, matching up the shoulders and keeping the right side facing out.
Pin the sides of the dress together, leaving an appropriate armhole unpinned.
Now sew up those side seams close to the edge.
If your scarf has edges that are prone to fraying, you will also need to finish the armhole edges.
7. Attach straps to your scarf dress
Use wide elastic strips cut to length.
Fold the shoulder edges under and pin them to each end of the elastic. Repeat for the other shoulder.
Topstitch the straps in place.
