Your Autumn Wardrobe Starter Kit

Surely you all will agree that ticking off items on a list is such a great feeling. If you love to be organised not only when it comes to your chores but also your wardrobe, keep reading for some autumnal fashion essentials that will get you well on your way to a capsule wardrobe this season.

It goes without saying that you need a trench coat in your Autumn wardrobe. Crucially, you need one in a neutral colour (though of course feel free to grab a second, bolder, trench!) so that you can wear it over every single one of your outfits. Camel, beige, black and cream are great colours for trench coats.

Make sure you are completely in love with whichever one you pick so that, even though you are wearing it all the time, you still feel special every time you put it on. The one in the photo above is Burberry but you can pick up amazing trench coats from the likes of Jack Wills, Holland Cooper, River Island and ASOS.

Even those of us who aren't really jeans people probably have a pair in our wardrobe for the colder months. You need something to keep you warm on those chilly mornings or to wear in the rain. A pair of black jeans will work with everything and take you nicely through to winter, while a pair of white jeans can actually look very smart and even work for the office.

You also, of course, need plenty of knitwear for the transitional months, whether it's cardigans, jumpers or jumper dresses. Cardigans and jumpers are great because you can just take them off and wear a t-shirt if it gets too warm. Jumper dresses also look so stylish with over-the-knee boots - think Gossip Girl vibes.

Thanks to the pandemic, cosy, comfortable knitwear is a big trend this year (not that it ever really goes out of fashion) so we have lots on the high street to choose from. 90s-inspired matching knitwear sets are also still really big at the moment.

If you don't describe Autumn as 'trenchcoat season' then you probably describe it as 'boots season'. Whether it's ankle boots, knee-highs, over-the-knee or wellington boots, you need them in your wardrobe this time of year.

Over-the-knee boots look amazing with shorter hems and add an extra level of warmth to your outfit. These ones from Raid are an affordable option for those of us that struggle to pull boots over our calves.

A pair of knee-high boots look excellent over skinny trousers for that equestrian aesthetic, while ankle boots with a low heel are smart and stylish for the office while still keeping you comfortable if you're on your feet all day.

And of course I won't leave you without a summary you can copy and paste so that you can literally tick off each item as you add it to your wardrobe! Here's everything you need for your Autumn wardrobe starter kit:

  • A neutral-toned trench coat
  • The perfect pair of jeans
  • All the knitwear you can lay your hands on
  • Boots, boots, boots!
