How to Make a Zippered Clutch Purse Out of a Placemat

My kitchen was in need of a small makeover. I noticed it only had three placemats, so I switched them out with some new ones, and now my kitchen looks great! Fortunately, that leaves me with these placemats I no longer need on the table anymore, so I decided I’m going to use them to make a placemat clutch purse. All you need to make your own clutch bag is a straw placement that’s sturdy and bendable, a few extra materials, and a can-do attitude. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Straw Placemat
  • Zipper
  • Glue gun
  • Decorative materials
Attaching the zipper

1. Attach the zipper

It doesn’t matter how long your zipper is, as long as it’s not longer than half of your placemat. Center it on the top edge and pin it in place, making sure the right side of the zipper is facing the wrong side (or the interior) of the placemat.

Then, very carefully stitch along the zipper.

2. Attach the zipper on the opposite side

Unzip the zipper and fold the placemat in half with right sides facing, and make sure the zipper will go across to the other side nicely. It’s okay if the end doesn’t fit perfectly as you'll sew it up.

3. Sew the remaining ends

Flip your DIY placemat clutch right side out and sew along the open edges, tucking in the zipper end so it doesn’t poke out.

4. Decorate!

You can decorate your DIY clutch purse however you want. I decided to go with a tassel and pom-pom combo, and I just glued all of this down with my glue gun.

I also decided to add a pom-pom to the zipper by attaching it to a jump ring.
