Emulsified Blueberry Sugar Scrub with Tea Seed Oil

Scented with a blueberry fragrance oil, this homemade sugar scrub smells like just fresh picked, sweet summer blueberries! It’s a fun and practical way to exfoliate skin so it not only looks healthy, but also feels soft and smooth.

This body scrub recipe with sugar is formulated with an emulsifying wax to create an emulsified sugar scrub. By making this DIY blueberry scrub with an emulsifier, it keeps the product from feeling greasy and oily when applied to skin. It also makes the product less slippery when used in the tub. This in turn can help to prevent accidental slips and falls. (Although, it’s always important to be cautious when using this type of product when bathing.)

In addition, this easy sugar body scrub recipe is also crafted using tea seed oil for its natural skin care benefits. (You can learn more about those benefits below!)

And, to make this skin care product perfect for gifting, I’ve also provided free printable labels for your own personal use. Simply apply the labels to the lids of the finished blueberry sugar scrubs you create. Then give them as homemade gifts to friends and family. After all, who doesn’t love natural beauty gifts?

What is Tea Seed Oil?

What’s tea seed oil, you ask? Camellia (tea seed) oil is a natural plant oil derived from the seeds of the Camellia oleifera plant from which green tea comes. This carrier oil, which is used both for cooking and skin care applications, contains valuable antioxidants. Because of this, Camellia oil or tea seed oil can help both skin and hair look rejuvenated and revitalized.

And, like fractionated coconut oil, tea seed oil not only provides skin with extra hydration, but it is also quickly and easily absorbed by skin. This in turn means your skin will feel silky smooth, not greasy. Camellia seed oil can help to improve both the tone and texture of skin as well as reduce the appearance of aging.

Skin Benefits of Tea Seed Oil in Sugar Scrubs

Following are some of the additional skin care benefits of using tea seed oil to make a sugar scrub:

  • As a natural moisturizer, it plumps and hydrates skin.
  • Tea seed oil helps to stimulate collagen production for more youthful looking skin.
  • Camellia (tea) seed oils contains naturally occurring polyphenols which possess antibacterial and antifungal properties. This means it can assist in reducing acne breakouts.
  • It has astringent properties whereby it helps to maintain a natural balance of oil production. Another benefit if you’re prone to breakouts.
  • The antioxidants present in this ingredient can help to reduce redness and irritation.
  • It’s believed that tea seed oil inhibits the production of melanin in skin, thereby reducing the occurrence of hyperpigmentation as you age.
  • The antioxidants combined with the vitamins A and B found in tea seed oil can help to increase skin’s elasticity as well as reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Now that you know about all the wonderful benefits tea seed oil provides skin, it’s time learn how to make your own blueberry sugar scrub recipe!

Blueberry Sugar Scrub Recipe

Ingredients:

These are the ingredients you’ll need to make my homemade blueberry sugar scrub:

How to Make a Blueberry Scented Body Scrub:

My DIY blueberry sugar scrub recipe yields six 8 oz. sugar scrubs. All ingredients are listed by weight. Therefore, you need to weigh out each ingredient using a digital scale to successfully recreate this recipe.

Let’s get started! Here are the steps to follow to make an emulsified blueberry sugar scrub:

1. Begin by using a digital scale to weigh out the shea butter and emulsifying wax into a Pyrex Prepware 8-Cup Glass Measuring Cup or similar. Heat in a microwave at 50% power until melted. (Alternately you can also use a double boiler.) Remove from heat.

2. Weigh out the tea seed oil and jojoba oil and stir into the melted shea butter and wax. Follow with the blueberry fragrance oil, making sure to weigh it first to get the correct amount called for in my blueberry sugar scrub recipe.

3. In a separate container, weigh out and combine the sugar, flax seed powder, blue mica powder and glitter. Whisk well with a fork until all the ingredients are thoroughly incorporated. (If your tub stains easily I recommend using Polysorbate 80 to help prevent staining and/or using a lesser amount of mica powder.)

4. Now pour the dry mixture into the liquid ingredients. Mix well with a fork until the wet and dry ingredients are fully incorporated with one another.

5. Spoon or pour the blueberry sugar scrub evenly into your containers, then screw on the lids. (I used six Amber PET Heavy Wall 8 oz. Plastic Jars with Lined Aluminum Caps. You can find these containers at SKS Bottle & Packaging here.)

Blueberry Sugar Scrub Packaging and Labels

If you’d like to label the lids for your DIY blueberry sugar scrubs, all you need to do is print out the labels I’ve provided. You can print 4 oz. container labels here or 8 oz. container labels here onto full size blank sticker paper sheets. Then simply cut out the labels using scissors, peel off the back and attach to the lids of your containers for homemade gifts or personal use.

Can I Sell Sugar Scrubs?

If you’d like to sell your finished product, then you will need to label the sugar scrubs according to FDA guidelines. If you are unsure about labeling laws then I highly recommend the book, Soap and Cosmetic Labeling: How to Follow the Rules and Regs Explained in Plain English, by Marie Gale. It’s the best place to get started to ensure you include all the information required by law.
