How to Make Edge Control Easily at Home With All-Natural Ingredients

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make edge control. Edge control helps to smooth and slick down the strands along your hairline. Most commercial edge control products contain alcohol, which is super drying to these delicate hairs. This DIY edge control for natural hair is ultra-nourishing.
I love to make eco-friendly, pocket-friendly, easy, and healthy ways to care for yourself. Here is how to make your own edge control at home that is gentle, natural, and healthy, and gets the job done!
Tools and materials:
- Candelilla wax (powdered)
- Olive oil
- Castor oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Rosemary essential oil
- Airtight container
- Heat safe container
- Measuring spoons
- Spoon to stir with
- Lidded pot
- Tongs
- Small edge control brush or toothbrush
- Stove
1. Make the homemade edge control recipe
Take a heat-safe jar. I like to use a jam-style glass jar with a metal cover.
Put in 1 tablespoon candelilla wax. Then 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Then 1 tablespoon of castor oil. Stir them gently to combine. Seal the jar.
2. Cook the ingredients
Fill a lidded pot with water from the tap. Put the pot on the stove and turn the heat to medium-high. Place the tightly sealed jar into the still-cool water, put the pot lid on, and let it come to a slow boil.
Keep it there until everything is melted in the jar. This will take about 15 minutes.
3. Add fragrance
While the oil base is cooking on the stove, take out the airtight container. Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
Then add 10 drops of rosemary essential oil. Gently swirl the essential oils together.
4. Cool the mixture
Switch off the stove. Use a pair of tongs to carefully remove the glass jar from the pot. Using a potholder or thick towel, unscrew the top of the jar.
Carefully pour the hot oil mixture into the airtight container with the essential oils.
Stir to combine thoroughly. Let it cool. As it cools, it will solidify into a pasty-waxy consistency, perfect for using for edge control.
Keep this product in the airtight container with the lid closed except for when using it. It is a natural product and you want to keep it as pure as possible. Keep away from heat because it may liquefy. If this happens, just let it cool again.
How to use the DIY edge control
Take a small brush or old toothbrush and rub the bristle side on the surface. This helps distribute the edge control onto the bristles.
Once you have a nice amount, you apply the edge control to your edges and sideburns.
You can even use it to tame any flyaways!
