Tools and Materials:

  • Alka-Seltzer tablets
  • Warm water
  • Soft-bristled brush
  • Towel

Precautions

  • Avoid Certain Materials: Do not use Alka-Seltzer to clean jewelry with porous stones (such as pearls), soft gemstones (like opals), or delicate materials that could be damaged by the acidity of the solution.
  • Test on a Small Area: Before cleaning the entire piece of jewelry, test the Alka-Seltzer solution on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn't cause any damage or discoloration.
  • Limit Frequency: Do not use this method too frequently, as it could potentially cause damage over time, especially to sensitive materials.

Here's how to work the magic:

  1. Prepare the Solution: Dissolve a couple of Alka-Seltzer tablets in a bowl of warm water. The effervescence will activate, creating a gentle yet effective cleaning solution.
  2. Soak Your Jewelry: Submerge your jewelry pieces in the Alka-Seltzer solution. Allow them to soak for a few minutes, letting the bubbles work their magic to loosen dirt and grime.
  3. Gently Scrub: Using a soft-bristled brush, gently scrub the jewelry to remove any stubborn residue. Be cautious with delicate pieces to avoid damage.
  4. Rinse Thoroughly: Once cleaned to your satisfaction, rinse the jewelry under running water to remove any remaining solution.
  5. Dry and Shine: Pat the jewelry dry with a soft towel, ensuring no moisture remains. Admire the newfound sparkle of your freshly cleaned treasures!

I don't think so. Not on jewelry.

My parents used Tarnex for decades on the silver in the china closet. I used it a few times & it works well but it cleans by actually removing the top layer. I didn't like that & stopped using it. I heard toothpaste worked & tried it. It works amazing! When in a hurry I squirted some in my hand & rubbed it on really well & that does work but to give a detailed cleaning I use an old toothbrush & then hot water to melt the leftover toothpaste out of the small gaps & either pat dry on a towel or a paper towel. It'll even smell like toothpaste for a little while.
