Let’s face it. In today’s crazy busy world it can be darn near impossible to squeeze in enough time for yourself – especially if you have a family you’re always putting first. So finding the time for a pedicure is probably laughably impossible. But at the same time it’s the end of summer in retail land. Which means so many super cute summer shoes are now on sale! And you still have some time to put some wear into them. (And maybe sneak in a vacation before fall. One can hope.)

Anyhow, if you’ve ever been on the wrong side of a mean girl, then you know someone is going to hear about it if your feet are in serious need of attention. So order some supplies, pour a glass a wine — pour the wine AFTER you shop or oops! — and then whip up my exfoliating homemade foot scrub for cracked heels on a night after the kids have gone to bed.

What Can I Use at Home to Scrub My Feet?

There are number of solutions you can try to exfoliate feet to remove dead skin and calluses. Here are some of the most common methods for scrubbing feet at home:

  • A pumice stone, or natural lava stone, is a common tool used to scrub feet at home. To use this foot care product, first soak your feet for about 10-minutes. Then, wet the stone and massage onto feet.
  • Another foot care product for removing dead skin and calluses from feet is paraffin wax. This method is trickier to use than other alternatives. If not done correctly, it can cause burns or skin irritation. However, if you are familiar with the process, you can take care to avoid any mishaps. To use paraffin wax to remove dead skin, heat wax to about 125°F. Then dip feet into the melted wax several times. Finally, wrap your feet in plastic until the wax hardens. Once hardened, remove the wax. This will also remove dead skin at the same time.
  • A DIY foot scrub for dead skin, such as my homemade pedicure scrub, is another great option for exfoliating feet. These homemade foot scrubs are made with exfoliating ingredients such as sugar, salt or pumice that slough off dead skin cells. In addition, they also contain ingredients such as a carrier oil or body butter that moisturize feet at the same time.
  • Epsom salt foot soaks are other great solutions for exfoliating feet at home. To use a foot salt soak with Epsom salt, combine 1/2 cup of this salt soak in a large bowl or pot with warm water. Soak feet for 10-30 minutes. While soaking, massage some of the salts over your feet to help to exfoliate and cleanse skin.
  • Another great option for removing dead skin and calluses from feet is a foot peel. This at-home spa treatment is formulated with exfoliating foot powders and moisturizers to restore feet to a healthy appearance. To use this method to exfoliate feet, follow the directions on the foot peel package. This normally includes slipping feet into plastic booties filled with a foot care formula then waiting an hour prior to removing. Once the booties are taken off, dead skin and calluses flake off without scrubbing.

Pedi Foot Scrub Benefits

The ingredients used to make this DIY foot scrub to remove dead skin and calluses are ideal for feet. They also provide a number of natural skin care benefits. The benefits of using this pedi foot scrub are as follows:

  • Pumice and sea salt are two simple and natural ways to exfoliate skin. So I started with these ingredients for my pedi foot scrub recipe.
  • I then combined them with shea butter and a blend of apricot kernel and coconut oils for a simple, yet effective hydrating base for the exfoliants to moisturize dry, cracked feet.
  • In addition, I also used coconut oil for this natural foot care recipe. Coconut oil is super popular in skin care right now and for good reason! I chose to use coconut oil in this DIY pedi foot scrub for its natural antibacterial and antifungal properties. These properties give this DIY foot scrub a leg up when fighting both foot odor and nail fungus.
  • Coconut oil specifically contains three essential fatty acids: caprylic acid, capric acid, and lauric acid. All of these components have been found to inhibit and kill candida. (Candida being the most common cause of foot and toenail fungus.) Coconut oil’s antibacterial properties then work to target troublesome foot odor.
  • A blend of peppermint and spearmint essential oils then add a cooling effect to the final product.

Pedi Foot Scrub Ingredients for Cracked Heels:

You will need the following ingredients to make this pedi foot scrub with coconut oil to exfoliate and remove dead skin from feet and help repair cracked heels:

  • .5oz. Refined coconut oil: Adding coconut oil to your homemade foot scrub provides it with several skin care benefits. Not only does it moisturize skin, but it also assists in preventing the growth of fungus and yeast. Coconut oil also has antibacterial properties.
  • 3.75 oz. Refined shea butter: Shea butter is a rich, moisturizing body butter that’s suitable for all skin types. This ingredient helps to rehydrate skin when used to make a DIY foot scrub.
  • .25 oz. Apricot kernel oil: This carrier oil makes a lovely addition to any homemade pedicure scrub for feet. Not only does it improve skin tone, but it also nourishes dry or damaged skin. Its naturally occurring antiseptic, antibacterial, and antioxidant effects also help to promote healing.
  • .1 oz. French green clay (or sea clay): This gentle cosmetic clay helps to exfoliate dry and dead skin so it’s easily removed. In addition, it also helps to improve skin circulation, so skin feels soft, smooth an rejuvenated.
  • .75 oz. Fine ground pumice: Like a pumice stone, but ground into fine particles, this is a must have ingredient for any pedicure foot scrub recipe! It works hard to exfoliate skin and remove dead skin and calluses from feet.
  • 15.25 oz. Fine ground Sea salt: Sea salt is naturally antibacterial and rich in nutrients that support healthy skin. This DIY foot scrub ingredient is also exfoliating and able to help slough off dead skin cells and smooth rough calluses. It remove impurities from skin, detoxifies skin and promotes new cell growth.
  • 1.5mL Peppermint essential oil: This essential oil provides a cooling sensation for feet. It also helps to cleanse skin, unclog pores and reduce skin redness and inflammation.
  • 1.5mL Spearmint essential oil: Another refreshing essential oil for DIY foot care, this oil cools and refreshes skin while also helping to relieve itching and dryness. It’s also a wonderful cleanser that aids in promoting skin’s resilience and elasticity.

Tools and Equipment

In addition to the ingredients necessary to make this pumice and coconut oil foot scrub DIY, you will also need several common kitchen tools. These include:

  • A digital kitchen scale to weigh out the ingredients.
  • Mixing bowl for combining the pedi foot scrub ingredients. I prefer to use glass mixing bowls, however you can use any food-safe bowl.
  • A spatula or other utensil for mixing the coconut oil foot scrub with pumice and sea salt.
  • A double boiler is necessary to melt the shea butter and coconut oil called for in this skin care recipe. Alternately, you can also melt these ingredients at 50% power in a heat safe container in the microwave.
  • Low profile amber jars in the size of your choice, like these from SKS Bottle & Packaging, for packing and storing your final foot care product. I used two 8oz. containers for this pedicure scrub recipe.
  • A dropper or graduated transfer pipette is necessary to add the drops of essential oil to this DIY foot scrub for dead skin and calluses.

How to Make a Homemade Pedicure Scrub for Dead Skin and Calluses

Ready to get your feet pedicure ready and in shape for some summer fun? Follow these steps to make an exfoliating foot scrub with coconut oil to remove dead skin and calluses and repair cracked heels:

  1. Using a digital scale, weigh out the coconut oil and shea butter into a large mixing bowl. Combine these ingredients in a double boiler.
  2. Next, gently heat the shea butter and coconut oil over medium heat on the stovetop. Heat just until melted. Then remove from heat.
  3. Now weigh out the apricot kernel oil. Stir the apricot kernel oil into the melted shea butter and coconut oil blend.
  4. Using a fresh graduated transfer pipette for each essential oil, measure out both the peppermint essential oil and spearmint essential oil. Stir the essential oils into the liquid pedi foot scrub base.
  5. Next, weigh out the sea clay, pumice and sea salt. Mix the dry ingredients into the liquid ingredients until evenly combined throughout.
  6. Once, combined, evenly divide your pedi foot scrub between two 8 oz. low profile jars. Then screw the lids on your jars.
  7. Label you jars so you know what’s inside. I also recommend marking the date in which your DIY foot scrubs were made on the container so you remember when they were created. How to Use a Foot Scrub

To use your homemade foot scrub with coconut oil, first soak feet in warm water or an Epsom salt foot soak for 20-30 minutes. Then pat dry.

Massage the homemade pedicure scrub onto feet, then rinse with warm water and pat dry. If desired follow with a cooling foot spray. Then use a cracked heel salve or foot balm to lock in moisture and keep feet feeling soft and supple.

You can use this DIY pedi foot scrub prior to your pedicures. Or use it once monthly to maintain healthy looking feet. For feet that are severely dry or cracked, use this DIY foot scrub for dead skin and calluses twice weekly to improve skin condition.

Storage and Shelf Life

Store your pedi foot scrub in an airtight container in a cool, dark location when not in use. If using amber jars, like the ones I used, you can help to extend the shelf life of this product.

As this coconut oil foot scrub with pumice is formulated with more than 50% salt, it is self-preserving. Therefore, your pedicure scrub has a longer shelf life than most other DIY foot scrubs. As such, expect this foot care product to last for at least one year.

Tips for Making a Homemade Pedicure Scrub

Because everyone’s skin is different, you may want to make substitutions to this homemade foot scrub recipe to better suit your needs. I used a fine ground pumice for this DIY pedi foot scrub for gentler exfoliation. However, if your feet are in really bad shape, then you may want to opt for a coarser grain.

In addition, don’t be afraid to mix up the essential oils. If mint is not your scent, try a blend of lavender and tea tree essential oils instead.

Allergic to coconut oil? Not to worry. Babassu oil makes a wonderful substitute and offers many of the same skin care benefits as coconut oil! If you want to swap out the coconut oil in your DIY foot scrub for calluses and dead skin, simply make an equal substitution with babassu oil.
