Are you ready to DIY your summer? There’s really no special theme to this tutorial other than summer! Follow along and I’ll show you how to make DIY bronzer and tanning lotion, a t-shirt hack, some DIY sandals, and even a refreshing drink to reward yourself after completing these DIY summer projects! We’ve got lots to cover so let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Solid-colored t-shirt
  • Bleach pen
  • Flip-flop sandals
  • Rectangular scarf
  • Cocoa powder
  • Body lotion
  • Watermelon
  • Knife
  • Jar with a pump lid
Using a bleach pen on a t-shirt

1. DIY bleach pen t-shirt

Start by putting a piece of cardboard inside your t-shirt, so whatever you do on one side doesn’t transfer to the other side.

Use a bleach pen to draw your words or design on your t-shirt. Let your t-shirt sit for at least one hour so the bleach soaks in.

DIY t-shirt hack

Throw your t-shirt in the washer and dryer as you would normally wash it and you’re all done. Caution: don’t wash your t-shirt with other clothing this time around! You don’t want to wash the bleach out of this and onto something else.

DIY scarf sandals

2. DIY scarf sandals

Flip-flop sandals are a staple of summer, and here’s a way to upstyle them!

Cut a rectangular scarf in half lengthwise. You will use one half of the scarf for each sandal.

How to refashion your flip flops

Fold one scarf rectangle in half widthwise, and put the looped end of the scarf under the flip-flop toe piece. Then pull the rest of the scarf through the loop making a slip knot. Pull the skip knot tight.

Now wrap each side of the scarf around the corresponding strap of your flip-flop. Keep wrapping the scarf around until the strap is completely covered by it. Making sure you keep the scarf neat and tightly wrapped.

Repeat with the other flip-flop.

DIY scarf sandals

To wear your new scarf sandals, bring the ends of the scarf around the back of your ankle, then cross the scarf in the back and bring it to the front. You can wrap it around your ankle as many times as you wish, before tying it off.

Since nothing is permanently attached, it’s really easy to remove the scarf and replace it with another color or pattern to keep your sandals matching your outfits!

How to make DIY tanning lotion

3. DIY tanning lotion

Mix cocoa powder with any lotion of your choice, using equal amounts of each. Keep mixing until you have a nice smooth lotion consistency.

Using the DIY tanning lotion

To use your DIY tanning lotion, just apply some to your hands and then rub it in wherever you want the DIY tan. You can adjust the intensity of the tan by adding more or less cocoa powder to the mixture. You are going to smell delicious, but as you can imagine, this will wash right off when it gets wet.

DIY watermelon ice cubes

4. DIY watermelon ice cubes

Ok, so this isn't a fashion or beauty DIY, but you need to keep hydrating when DIY-ing!

Making your summer drink even more refreshing couldn’t be easier than this. Just cut a watermelon into cube-sized pieces and pop the cut pieces into your freezer for at least 2 hours.

Refreshing summer drink

Add your watermelon ice cubes to any summer drink. Try it with lemonade!
