How to Make a Mini Skirt - Easy Step-By-Step DIY Tutorial
Today, I'm going to be showing you how to make a mini skirt at home. For a year now, I’ve been recreating some of the beautiful clothing items that I come across on social media, and that really has helped me grow and develop my skills.
So, I hope that this tutorial will inspire some of the DIYers out there that are just learning how to sew. If you're interested in seeing how I made this DIY mini skirt, please keep reading.
Just one tip before getting started: I used a stretchy material for this skirt and found it a bit difficult to work with. So if you are new to sewing, this project might be easier with more stable fabric.
Tools and materials:
- Paper
- Ruler
- Measuring tape
- Pen
- Scissors
- Fabric
- Fabric pen
- Rotary cutter
- Seam ripper
- PIns
- Sewing machine
1. Draw the pattern
To begin, I took the measurements of my hips and waist and used those to draw a pattern. For full instructions on how to draw the pattern, watch the video from 1:27-3:08
2. Cut the fabric
I arranged my pattern on the fabric, with the straight side on the fold, and cut the fabric.
Then I flipped the pattern over and cut the second piece of fabric, also on the fold.
3. Pin and sew the sides together
I pinned both pieces along the side edges, right sides together, stopping at the point where I wanted the slit.
I sewed the seams using a zigzag stitch because my fabric is stretchy. Then, I went over all the edges with an overlock stitch to prevent fraying.
4. Pin and sew the hems
Next, I folded the top edge over twice, and folded the bottom edge once, toward the wrong side of the fabric. Because I have stretch fabric, I used my twin needle to do a double twin stitch on both the top and bottom edges of my skirt.
For the slit, I folded over the edges and did a straight stitch down.
And that’s it!
How to make a mini skirt tutorial
I decided to accessorize my DIY mini skirt with a rigid crocodile print belt. I think the mini skirt turned out really cute, and I love it so much. This will definitely be a staple in my wardrobe. I hope you enjoyed learning how to make a mini skirt at home as much as I did!
