Easy Vintage-Inspired Lace Skirt DIY

Tools and materials:

• 2 types of lace fabric
• Lace trim
• Elastic band
• Measuring tape
• Pins
• Scissors
• Sewing machine
• Serger

Measure and mark

First, I took my hip measurements and decided how long I wanted the skirt to be. Then, I folded my fabric in half and marked the bottom edge of the skirt in an arc from the corner. I also marked an arc for the waistline, which I made wide enough to pull over my hips, since the waist will be elastic, anyway.

Cut

Then I cut the fabric.

Cut, sew, and gather

I cut strips of point d’esprit fabric and connected them with a french seam to make a strip that was 7 yards long. Then I ran a basting stitch along one edge of the fabric and pulled the threads at the end to gather it. 

Sew

Next, I sewed down the side seam of the skirt.

Pin and sew

Then I pinned the ruffle layer to the bottom edge of the skirt and sewed it down.

I finished the edge of the ruffle with a lace trim which I pinned along the bottom edge and sewed down. 

Make the lining

For the lining of the skirt, I used cotton fabric. For the top portion, I cut a piece of fabric to the length I wanted and with the same size waistline as the lace skirt, and sewed down the side seam. I also cut a long strip that I gathered on one edge to create a ruffle and sewed it to the bottom edge of the lining. 

Attach lining

Then I inserted the lining into the lace skirt and sewed them together around the waistline. 

Serge

For a clean finish, I serged any raw edges on the seam allowances. 

Cut and sew

I cut a piece of elastic that was long enough to fit snugly but comfortably around my waist and sewed the ends together.

Pin

Then I pinned the elastic to the top edge of the skirt at the quarter points.

Sew

To complete my vintage lack skirt, I sewed the elastic to the top edge of the skirt with a zigzag stitch, stretching the elastic between the pins as I sewed. 

This skirt is so flowy and feminine. I think it came out gorgeous.
