Today’s tutorial comes as a result of some recent thrift shopping. After finding a really cute blue cardigan - that just wasn’t my size - I decided to renew, reuse and upcycle! So, without further ado, here is my tutorial on how to make a cardigan set.

How to make a cardigan set

Find your length

To start, you need to try the cardigan on and decide what length you want to crop it to (I decided to cut it at around the third button). Use some scissors to cut it at your desired length. Next, use a sewing machine and very carefully hem the bottom. Make sure to either be very gentle and keep the fabric from stretching, or commit to a full lettuce hem. Either way, sew using a zigzag stitch.

Create the crop top

Grab the remaining fabric from the cardigan and measure it around your torso - cut off any excess fabric. Remove the buttons and hem the bottom with a zigzag stitch. If you did a lettuce hem on the cardigan, do one on the crop top so that both parts match.

Add an elastic

Take a safety pin and attach it to the end of an elastic. Then, slide the elastic through the original hemming of the cardigan (not the one we just made). This will serve as the top of your crop top. Next, measure the top on your torso again, and then sew the shirt closed.
