Today, I’m going to show you how to create an off-shoulder sweatshirt. You could wear this with a skirt, a pair of jeans, or anything you want!

By the end of this tutorial, you’ll be able to make your own off-the-shoulder sweatshirt that turns something you’d rarely wear into something you’ll never want to take off. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Two sweatshirts
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
Turning the sweatshirt inside out

1. Turn the sweatshirt inside out

Flip your sweatshirt inside out and lay it on a flat surface

2. Cut the bottom ribbing off the sweatshirt

Chop off the wide band at the bottom of your sweatshirt. We’re going to reuse this for a comfortable neckline for your new DIY off-the-shoulder sweatshirt.

3. To hem or not to hem?

Sweatshirt fabric doesn’t fray, so feel free to leave the hem as it is for a cool, deconstructed look. If that’s not your style, you can simply fold it under and give it a nice, clean hem.

4. Fold your second sweatshirt

Fold your second sweatshirt in half, ensuring the neckline and shoulder seams are evenly lined up.

5. Cut the neckline

Chop off the neckline by cutting a curved line through both layers of fabric from underneath the neckline to the shoulder seams.

Unfolding your sweatshirt should give you a perfectly deconstructed, Flashdance look! You can leave as-is and wear it off your shoulders, but if you want a more finished look, move on to step 6.

Attaching the waistband to the neckline

6. Attach the waistband to the neckline

Attach the waistband from the previous sweatshirt to your off-the-shoulder top. Do this by aligning the two fabrics, right sides facing and raw edges lined up.

Sew together with a wide, tight zig-zag stitch. If your waistband fabric isn’t as long as your sweatshirt, you will have to stretch as you stitch so they match up.

7. Flip

Flip right side out and you can now enjoy your new, fabulous off-the-shoulder sweatshirt!

Nice. Cute. You could do this with just one sweatshirt. It would probably still be long enough, especially since crop styles are still so popular.
