I was looking at this super Anthropologie one piece swimsuit with laced sides and really wanted it, but it was just too much money.

So I decided to see if I could make one myself by thrift flipping a simple swimsuit by adding grommets and lacing. And it worked!

I got the sexy swimsuit of my dreams at a huge discount, with only minimal sewing required.

Tools and materials:

  • One piece swimsuit
  • Grommets
  • Hole cutter
  • Grommet setter and anvil
  • Hammer
  • Medium weight fusible interfacing
  • Ribbon or fold over elastic
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Cutting board and rotary cutter (optional)
  • Iron
  • Scrap piece of muslin
  • Sewing machine
Interfacing

1. Interfacing

Cut open the side seams of your bathing suit.

Interfacing

Cut four strips of interfacing, each 4 inches wide and the length of the side seam of your swimsuit.

This will let you fold back each side of your suit by 2 inches and provide a strong base for the grommets.

Interfacing

Trim the interfacing to fit the exact shape of your side seams, so you don't get glue everywhere.

Interfacing

Place the interfacing to the wrong side of each side seam, with the glue side face down.

Lay a piece of muslin over your ironing board and fold it over the interfacing, to protect your iron and the board.

Iron the interfacing in place and let it cool.

Sewing side edges

2. Sew side edges

Fold the interfacing in half to the wrong side. Trim the curve at the top and bottom if necessary.

Sewing side edges

Use a straight or zigzag stitch to sew the side edges in place.

Adding grommets

3. Add the grommets

Plan how many grommets you want to use on each side and place them an equal distance apart.

Make sure they line up exactly on either side.

Adding grommets

Lay your swimsuit on a protective surface.

Hold the hole cutter vertically where you want the first hole to be, with the blade side downwards.

Hammer the end of the tool until it cuts through the fabric. If it doesn't make a clean hole, trim away the excess fabric with your scissors.

Adding grommets

Put the post part of the grommet face down through the hole.

Adding grommets

Place the washer on the inside of the fabric over the post, with the rounded side facing outwards.

Adding grommets

Put the front of the grommet face down on the anvil.

Adding grommets

Place the setter on top so it fits in the hole.

Hammer the end of the setter quite hard, until the washer snaps into place.

Repeat until all the grommets are inserted.

Adding lacing

4. Lacing

Cut two pieces of elastic or ribbon about twice as long as the length of the side seam.

Lace the sides from the top down, as if you were lacing a pair of shoes.

Tie the laces in a bow at the bottom.
